Tylenol Linked to Risk of Asthma in Children

Acetaminophen Also Associated with Eczema and Hay Fever

One of several studies published in The Lancet has found a link between acetaminophen and asthma in children.

In one study, data on 205,000 children found a 46 percent higher risk of asthma by age 6 or 7 in those who were given acetaminophen in the first year of life. Acetaminophen is more commonly known in the US by its brand name, Tylenol.

The same study found that moderate use of acetaminophen in the past year increased the risk of asthma by 61 percent. Doses of once a month or more were associated with three times the risk of asthma.

Acetaminophen was found to double the risk of eczema when children were exposed to the drug on a monthly basis. The medicine was also found to triple the risk of repetitive sneezing, nasal congestion and hay fever by the time children were 6 or 7.
