Bayer Sued Over Trasylol in Canadian Class Action

A class action lawsuit has been launched in Calgary, Alberta, against Bayer Inc, the maker of Trasylol, a drug associated with kidney failure, stroke and other serious health problems.

The suit has been filed on behalf of patients who received the drug during heart surgery and consequently suffered adverse health effects, such as those experienced by Bob Zerebecki. Just hours after Zerebecki was administered Trasylol during surgery in 2006, he suffered a stroke, which left him unable to work. Now 62, Zerebecki was a calculus and physics teacher.

The suit alleges that Bayer knew "or ought to have known, that Trasylol increased the risk of renal (kidney) failure, (heart attacks), heart failure and stroke" and failed to inform patients of the risks.
