Toyota Recalls 9,400 Lexus GX460 SUVs

Detroit, MN: Toyota Motor Corp., has announced that it will recall 9,400 Lexus GX 460 Sport Utility Vehicles to correct a problem that may result in drivers losing control of the vehicle.

The recall follows a sales suspension of the Lexus GX 460 SUV on April 14, further to a defect discovered by Consumer Reports during routine testing. The problem could result in the vehicle losing control during a turn and skidding or worst case scenario, rolling over.

Based on a rare "don't buy" rating issued on April 13th, 2010, by the magazine Consumer Reports, Toyota announced it was voluntarily suspending sales of the 2010 Lexus GX 460 sport utility vehicle in the US and Canada. The report allegedly stated the vehicle has a dangerous handling problem that could lead to serious injury or death.

The Consumer Reports recommendation is based on an allegedly faulty electronic stabilizer control system (ESC), which can cause the SUV to rollover potential after going into a sideways skid. The ESC system is meant to prevent a skid that could result in the vehicle rolling over. In testing, Consumer Reports found that the ESC didn't kick in until the vehicle was already well into a sideways skid.

Toyota has not publicly identified the source of the problem, but has confirmed the problem identified by Consumer Reports, stating that is had duplicated the test and results obtained by CR. Modifications to the vehicle's onboard stability control software will be undertaken in an effort to correct the problem.
