Flue-Cured Tobacco Cooperative Stabilization Corp.
Class action status is being sought in a lawsuit filed against the Flue-Cured Tobacco Cooperative Stabilization Corp. on behalf of a group of tobacco growers in southeastern North Carolina. The suit is seeking disbandment of the cooperative, which has member farmers from Virginia to Florida, and distribution of the $245 million in stockholder equity to its members.
The farmers claim that the co-op's primary function ceased to exist with the federal buyout of tobacco quotas and the end of tobacco price supports. According to an attorney for the plaintiffs, "We believe their primary purpose is no longer being served. These growers are entitled to their equity credits, and the corporation should be dissolved."
