Statins

Were you looking for Simvastatin and Amiodarone or Statin Drugs or Zetia or Zocor lawsuits?

Statins are a class of drug that lower cholesterol levels in the blood. They do this by reducing the amount of cholesterol the liver produces. By lowering the amount of cholesterol in the blood, statins are used to treat and prevent atherosclerosis, which can cause chest pain, heart attacks and strokes. Statins have reportedly been linked to an increased risk of rhabdomyolysis and cardiomyopathy.

Common side effects of statins include headache, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, rash, weakness and muscle pain.

Statins and Rhabdomyolysis

Rhabdomyolysis is a serious condition in which muscle tissue is broken down and enters the bloodstream. It can result in kidney failure and death. Rhabdomyolysis occurs more frequently in patients who use statins in combination with other medications that cause rhabdomyolysis or with drugs that prevent the statins from being eliminated from the body and therefore raise the level of statins in the patient's blood.

Patients who take statins and experience unexplained joint or muscle pain should seek medical attention.

Statins and Cardiomyopathy

avandiaheartattack Some statins have reportedly been linked to an increased risk of cardiomyopathy, a serious weakening of the heart muscle or a change in the structure of the heart muscle. Cardiomyopathy is associated with the heart's inability to pump blood adequately and other problems related to the function of the heart.

Statins and Hyperglycemia

On February 28, 2012, the FDA announced that the warning label on statins would be strengthened to alert patients to the potential increased risk of hyperglycemia and Type 2 diabetes. The agency further announced that statins would carry information about the risk of memory loss and confusion associated with the medications, although those conditions reportedly subside when patients discontinue statin use.

Statins and Birth Defects

Women who are pregnant are cautioned against using statins because of the risk of adverse effects on the fetus.

Statin Medications

Baycol (cerivastatin): Baycol was withdrawn from the US market in 2001 because of data indicating an increased risk of rhabdomyolysis compared with other statin medications.

Crestor (rosuvastatin)

Lescol (fluvastatin)

Lipitor (atorvastatin)

Mevacor (lovastatin)

Pravachol (pravastatin)

Simcor (combination of simvastatin and niacin)

Vytorin (a combination of simvastatin and ezetimibe): Vytorin has been linked to a risk of liver problems and cardiomyopathy. Vytorin was the subject of a lawsuit, which was settled in 2009. That lawsuit alleged that Vytorin was not safe and was ineffective.

Zocor (simvastatin): Zocor has reportedly been linked to an increased risk of liver damage and myopathy.
