SSRI's: SSRI May Have Caused Reflux Disease
SSRIs can cause many serious problems for infants and children. Many people associate the use of SSRIs while pregnant with birth defects such as primary pulmonary hypertension and other lung and heart problems. However, Theresa H. (not her real name) says that she thinks taking Paxil and Zoloft may have caused her child to develop gastro-esophageal reflux. [ MORE: SSRI AND REFLUX DISEASE]
SSRI's: "Stories like mine have to be out there"
Before her son was born in 2003, Louise Morgan had been taking SSRIs for post-partum depression; her doctor had initially prescribed Selexa, then later changed her prescription to Lexapro. Morgan (not her real name pending possible legal action) says, "I took Lexapro from conception to post-partum, all the way along." Her doctor didn't mention anything about potential birth defects associated with SSRIs. [ MORE: SSRI, AUTISM LINK?]
Did SSRI Meds cause my Son's Birth Defects?

"I was induced (never went into labor) and Michael was born full-term on January 22, 2006. He looked normal for a minute or two but then he turned purple and the nurses literally ran him into the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The doctors told me they had never seen a baby this sick and that he would have to be flown to Utah Primary Children's Hospital. We were in Idaho. I felt like this was Doomsday." Paxil Delivered Death Certificate
"It wasn't until I went for an ultrasound, when I was five months pregnant, that I knew everything had gone wrong," says Goring. "After the ultrasound, I first thought I was just going to have a sick baby but he would be fine. All I was told was that his brain had developed but he had lots of blood flow to the brain. I was also told to come back the next day with my husband." [ MORE: PAXIL DEATH CERTIFICATE]
SSRIs a Deadly Prescription

"When Tyler was born we were prepared for the fact that he wasn't going to live - although his little heart beat for 45 minutes, he only took one complete breath. Once they cut the umbilical cord, his heart was checked and he also had a hole in his heart; this all came out in the autopsy. All of these problems were no surprise but it was still devastating. SSRI Toss Up: Withdrawals or Birth Defects?

Matilda Vasquez stayed on Paxil until she found out that she was pregnant with her first child, back in 2002. "As soon as I knew, I stopped taking my meds completely on my own accord," said Matilda. "I didn't want to take any chances, especially because it was my first pregnancy." But at the end of her first trimester, her doctor told Matilda to get back on Paxil because of possible withdrawal symptoms. [ MORE: PAXIL HEART DEFECTS ]

Diagnosing PPHN
|
|
A chest x-ray or ultrasound may help to diagnose whether or not a baby has PPHN. Doctors may order lab tests such as Arterial Blood Gas (ABG), Complete Blood Count (CBC), serum electrolyte tests, pulse oximetry or may do a spinal tap.
Babies diagnosed with PPHN usually need to be cared for in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Pure oxygen will be given to the baby through a tube inserted into the windpipe. An extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine (ECMO) may be used to act as an artificial heart and lung while the baby's lungs recover.
PPHN is a very serious birth defect, and even with treatment the PPHN baby may experience shock, heart failure, brain hemorrhage, seizures, kidney failure, organ damage and even death.
Babies who survive PPHN may have long-term breathing difficulties, seizures, developmental disorders and hearing loss.
Another study showed that mothers who took antidepressants during pregnancy gave birth to babies who experienced withdrawal symptoms such as seizures, tremors, gastrointestinal problems and sleep disturbances.
There is controversy over the safety of these drugs since the long term effects on the baby are still unknown.

More About SSRI's and PPHN
|
The newer antidepressants are classified as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, or SSRI's. In several studies over the last few years, SSRI antidepressants such as Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, etc. have been linked to birth defects in babies.
In a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, women who took antidepressants in the third trimester delivered babies who were six times more likely to have primary pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) or developing a lung disorder, primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) than babies not exposed to SSRIs.
PPH is a disorder of the lungs in which the arteries are severely restricted, causing the blood pressure in the pulmonary artery of the heart to rise to excessive levels. Blood flow is restricted and oxygen levels in the blood are suppressed.
While in the womb, the baby's circulation is handled by the placenta, and does not go through the lungs. After birth, the baby's circulation switches over from the ductus arteriosus (which now closes) to the lungs.
However, in a baby born with PPHN, the ductus arteriosus stays open and the baby's blood flow continues to bypass the lungs. Since the blood does not enter the lungs, it returns to the heart very low in oxygen.
The baby's organs, such as the brain, kidneys and liver quickly become stressed due to lack of oxygen. PPHN is usually diagnosed within 12 hours of delivery.

Jury Trials in 2008 Expected to Expose SSRI Maker's Dirty Secrets
The blockbuster sales figures for the new generation of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants (SSRI's), which have resulted from their promotion for so many unapproved uses, represents the most profitable off-label marketing coup in the history of modern medicine. Sales total about $21 billion a year, according to IMS Health. [ MORE: SSRI DIRTY SECRETS]
SSRIs and Newborns
When mothers took SSRIs during pregnancy, "The babies couldn't be consoled, they didn't sleep well, cried a lot, were difficult to feed and had tremors," explains Dr. Gideon Koren, Director and Professor of Motherisk, a program at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto dedicated to antenatal drug, chemical, and disease risk counselling. Some SSRIs have also been linked to birth defects. [ MORE: SSRIs AND NEWBORNS]
CDC Leads SSRI Disinformation Media Blitz
In a June 27, 2007 press release that made headlines all over the world the US Centers for Disease Control announced that birth defects associated with the use of antidepressants by pregnant women are rare. As proof for this claim, the CDC cited two new studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine. [ MORE: SSRI STUDIES]
More Studies Examine SSRI and Birth Defects
The Yale Pink and Blue Study is being conducted to determine the association between depression, anti-depressant use during pregnancy, and the risk of delivering a preterm infant or a low birth-weight baby. Babies born with low birth weights may be at risk for further developmental problems as they age. [ MORE: SSRI STUDIES]
Babies Exposed to SSRIs face variety of Birth Defects
It was about that time that studies began to come out linking SSRIs to serious birth defects. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that women who took SSRIs during their third trimester were six times more likely to have babies with PPHN than women who did not take SSRIs during their third trimester. SSRIs and the Warning Signs
Increasingly, new information and studies regarding SSRIs are warnings about the risks of birth defects if taken during pregnancy. It is now known that the use of any SSRI antidepressant in the first trimester of pregnancy is dangerous. One study resulted in a 40% increase in birth defects and more specifically a 60% increased risk in cardiac abnormalities. [ MORE: SSRI STUDIES]

MAR-03-07: Following his evaluation, Mr Kendall stated: "This data confirms what we found in adults with mild to moderate depression: SSRIs are no better than placebo, and there is no point in using something that increases the risk of suicide." [ MORE: SSRI SECRETS]
FEB-23-07: In recent years, Federal and state investigators have been going after the makers of the antidepressants known as the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), for promoting the drugs for off-label use under the theory that they are causing the submission of false claims to Medicare, Medicaid, and other public health care programs. [ MORE: SSRI PRESCRIBERS INVESTIGATED]
JAN-25-07: Some of us may remember back in the 1960s when a prescription sedative was marketed throughout 47 countries in the world, including Canada, that resulted in almost 10,000 babies born with 'phocomelia' - a birth defect whereby the upper portion of a limb is absent or poorly developed, so that the hand or foot attaches to the body by a short, flipper-like stump. [ MORE: FDA SSRI LENIANCY]
