Similac Lawsuit

The Similac lawsuit was brought in federal court in Chicago and was filed on behalf of Maria C. Kiely, the mother of a newborn baby boy. The lawsuit alleges that Abbott Laboratories knew that its baby formula was tainted for at least six days prior to announcing a Similac recall. As a result, the Similac lawsuit claims, babies throughout the US suffered gastrointestinal health issues after ingesting tainted formula.

Similac Recall

The September 22, 2010 Similac recall involved Similac powder infant formulas sold in the US, Puerto Rico, Guam and other countries in the Caribbean. The recall was announced after an internal quality review detected the remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in the product produced in one production area in a single manufacturing facility.

Similac Recall The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determined that the formula containing the beetles poses no immediate health risk; however, there is a possibility that infants who ingest the contaminated formula could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort. These symptoms are caused by small insect parts irritating the infant's GI tract.

If symptoms, including gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat, persist, a doctor should be contacted.

The Similac recall of powder infant formulas includes products sold in 8-oz, 12.4-oz, 12.9-oz, 25.7-oz, 30.8-oz, 34-oz and 36-oz cans and tubs. Specific products included in the Similac recall (depending on the lot number) are:
