Scripps Memorial Hospital

Unsanitary hospital instruments pose health risk.

Approximately 300 people who underwent stomach-reduction surgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital may have been exposed to hepatitis or HIV, due to a nurse who knowingly violated operating room procedures.

The nurse did not properly sterilize gyroscopes, which are instruments used to retrieve other surgical instruments from the stomach. The registered nurse in question worked at the hospital since September 2004 and has now resigned. The hospital contacted 250 of the 299 patients who may be at risk, many of whom reside outside Southern California.

If you had surgery at Scripps Hospital after September 2004, you may want to consult your doctor and undergo tests for Hepatitis and HIV.
