An estimated 1,000 suicides occur each year among students attending universities and colleges throughout the United States. New policies are being passed barring potentially suicidal students from returning to the educational institutes following an attempt. Students have been barred from campus and threatened with expulsion after checking in to hospitals for depression; others have been locked out of their dorms upon returning from hospitals after a suicide attempt, when they need help and guidance the most. Individual lawsuits have been filed claiming such rules violate federal law protecting disabled people from discrimination and claim the rules are an attempt to limit legal liability.
