Plavix Heart Attack and Stroke
Although approved by the FDA, the blood thinner Plavix has been found to nearly double the risk of a first heart attack or stroke in patients with high cholesterol or high blood pressure.
Plavix plus low-dose aspirin therapy was believed to prevent heart attack and stroke, but doctors are now being urged not to prescribe Plavix plus low-dose aspirin to patients who have not had a previous heart attack.
A recent study of 15,000 patients found an excess of bleeding and deaths among the patients who received the combination therapy.
Although the Plavix/aspirin combination has some benefit for patients who have previously had a heart attack or stroke, researchers were surprised to find that the combination therapy actually increased the heart attack risk for patients who had no previous heart attack or stroke.
