A federal lawsuit claims that Pfizer marketed Lipitor, its blockbuster cholesterol-lowering medication, fraudulently for off-label uses that are not approved by the FDA. In so doing, it breached federal guidelines for treating cholesterol. As a result, billions of dollars were paid by state Medicaid plans in bogus prescriptions for the drug. The suit charges the drug manufacturer with fraud and violations of state consumer-protection statutes and the federal anti-racketeering RICO statute.
