FDA to Hold a Public Hearing
An association exists between levels of bisphenol A (BPA) exposure and diabetes and heart disease including angina, coronary artery disease, heart attack, and elevated liver enzymes, according to a new study to be published in the prestigious Journal of American Medical Association on September 17.
The results of the study have been released early to coincide with a public hearing being held by the FDA today, on a draft assessment of BPA safety.
The study also looked at a possible associations between BPA and arthritis, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, thyroid disease, and stroke. Investigators in the study used data from 1,455 people registered in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2003 to 2004.
An accompanying editorial by Frederick vom Saal, Ph.D., of the University of Missouri, and John Peterson Myers, Ph.D., of Environmental Health Sciences in Charlottesville, VA, states that given these new data regulators could act and follow the lead of Canadian regulatory agencies, which have declared BPA a toxic chemical. They also stated that there is an aggressive disinformation campaign underway to throw doubt on independent scientific research into the dangers of BPA. And this may have potentially delayed any regulatory steps being considered by the FDA and European agencies to prevent its use.
