Natural Soaps Found to Contain Carcinogen

California Attorney General Sues Manufacturers

Whole Foods Market Inc, Avalon Natural Products, Beaumont Products Inc, and Nutribiotic, are all being sued by the California attorney general, for failure to appropriately label soap products containing 1,4-dioxane.

The chemical is a petroleum-derived contaminant, considered a potential carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency. The National Toxicology Program considers it a certain carcinogen in animals. And, it is on California's Proposition 65 list of chemicals known or suspected by the state to cause cancer or birth defects.

The brands of soaps, body washes, gels, and liquid dish soaps containing 1,4-dioxane were not specified in the suit. Consumers across the nation should be aware of soap products containing this chemical.
