Monsanto, Solutia accused of dumping PCBs

Escambia Bay residents have filed a lawsuit against Monsanto Co., Pharmacia Corp., and Solutia Inc. claiming the companies are responsible for releasing cancer-causing PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) into the bay waters, and potentially harming fish and people living downstream from the plant.

Researchers from the University of West Florida have found PCBs in fish taken from Excambia Bay that are several times higher than state and federal limits allow.

Plaintiffs are asking for the water and sediments of the bay and river to be cleaned up. Property values have deteriorated due to PCB contamination.
