Matson, Horizon accused of Price Fixing via Fuel Surcharges

The shipping companies are accused of fixing their rate increases through fuel surcharges at an amount much higher than the actual increase in fuel costs.

The lawsuit, which is seeking class certification, is looking for anyone who paid Matson for shipping between 1999 and the present.

The lawsuit claims the prices for diesel increased approximately 650 percent for newer ships and 450 percent for bunker oil. But during this same period, Matson and Horizon instigated fuel surcharge increases of about 3,800 percent.

Matson is the largest ocean shipper between Hawaii and the mainland, and holds about two-thirds of the market, while Horizon holds the rest.
