Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and Tishman Speyer Properties

A class action lawsuit has been filed against the insurance company and property owner for allegedly charging illegal market rate rents for more than 3,000 units in Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a group of tenants at Manhattan's largest apartment complex claiming MetLife wrongfully pocketed nearly $25 million in tax benefits since 1992 under the city's J-51 property tax program. The program prohibits a property owner from removing apartments from rent regulation while collecting the tax benefits. However, since 2001, tenants were improperly and unlawfully charged market rates for rent.
