Icy Hot Products Linked to Burn Injuries
Chattem, Inc., the manufacturer of Icy Hot Heat Therapy products, has issued a nationwide recall of its "heat therapy" products due to reports of skin irritation and burn injuries. To date, more than 200 people have reported getting first, second and third degree burns and other skin irritations from Icy Hot Heat Therapy products, prompting Chattem to order the recall.

Icy Hot Heat Patches: "Excruciating Pain"
Still more consumers are coming forward with stories of being injured by the Icy Hot Heat Therapy Patch after it was recalled. Many of these people were able to purchase the Icy Hot Patches even after they were recalled because somehow, not all stores have pulled the patches from their shelves. This means that many more people are being burned by a product they should not have been able to buy in the first place.

Icy Hot Heat Patches: Second-Degree Burn

Although the Icy Hot Heat Therapy Patches have been voluntarily recalled, people are still suffering injuries from using the patches. Not all stores have pulled the patches from the shelves and not all consumers have heard about the recall, so some are still buying the patches to alleviate their pain. Richard M. is one such person.

Icy Hot Heat Therapy Patch: "It's Like the Patch Ate My Skin"
 When Adela first put on the Icy Hot Heat Therapy Patch before her vacation, she thought she was making her trip more comfortable. Instead, she suffered serious burns, which wrecked her vacation and caused permanent scarring. Now, Adela is left wondering how a product designed to ease her discomfort could have wound up causing her so much pain.

Icy Hot Patch Leaves Man in Pain for Weeks
 What started as a sprained upper back turned into a month-long battle with pain and discomfort after a Chicago man used an Icy Hot Patch on his back and was left with an aggravating burn.

Icy Hot Heat Patch: Horrific Pain
Donna B. was simply trying to alleviate the arthritis pain in her shoulder when she put on an Icy Hot Heat Patch. The patch was not even hers; it was given to her by a co-worker who was also using a patch. Unfortunately, Donna wound up with burns on her upper back, where the Icy Hot Patch had been placed. She says her co-worker now deals with guilt from having given Donna the patch in the first place.

Icy Hot Heat Therapy is a self-heating disposable patch designed to soothe muscular and joint pain. The recalled products, which are sold over-the-counter and packaged in a red colored plastic pouch, include the following:
- Icy Hot Heat Therapy Air Activated Heat – Back
- Icy Hot Heat Therapy Air Activated Heat – Arm, Neck and Leg
- Icy Hot Heat Therapy Air Activated Heat – Arm, Neck, and Leg
As well, some of the recalled products were samples of the Icy Hot that were issued with a promotional package of the 3 oz. size of Aspercreme Pain Relieving Crème. The recall does not involve any other Icy Hot or Aspercreme products.
Chattem Inc. manufactures and sells health and beauty products, toiletries, proprietary drugs, fragrances and dietary supplements. According to Forbes.com, The Chattanooga, Tenn.-based company said the number of consumers affected by the product is fewer than 1,800, or a tenth of 1% of the approximately 1.8 million units sold. In fiscal 2007, sales of Icy Hot Heat Therapy represented 2.3% of Chattem’s total sales of $423 million.
Chattem advises consumers who have the Icy Hot Heat Therapy products under recall should immediately stop using the products, discard them, and/or return them to Chattem, Inc. Any adverse reactions experienced with the use of the Icy Hot Heat Therapy products should also be reported the FDA Adverse Event Reporting Program, online at www.fda.gov/medwatch/report.htm

Icy Hot Too Hot to Handle
 It may have been little more than a month ago that Chattem Inc, of Chattanooga recalled almost two million boxes of Icy Hot Patch over concern for second, and third-degree burns. However, the TV ads are back on the air—assuming they were pulled along with the recall—leading one to assume that whatever issue was at play in allegedly causing these injuries, has been rectified.

 APR-08-08: The makers of the Icy Hot Patch that was recalled in the US back in February went north in March, with Chattem Canada recalling a number of products in its Icy Hot Heat Therapy line.

 MAR-20-08: The TV ads featuring Shaquille O'Neal made the Icy Hot Pain patches look slick and convenient. "For pain across your whole back, Icy Hot has it covered." And why not? Rather than struggle with creams and ointments, the simple application of a patch, which initially provides a cooling sensation, followed by soothing heat, sounds blissfully easy. Unfortunately, it is alleged to have also given people blisters, and even burns.

 MAR-02-08: Patients who used the Icy Hot Heat Therapy Patch to relieve their pain may be feeling a lot more sore than they expected. Some reported serious burns on the area of their skin where they applied the Icy Hot Patch. In some cases, the burns lasted for over a week and caused a great deal of pain.
