Fosamax Linked to Strokes

Were you looking for Fosamax lawsuits?

A study published this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine reveals a higher risk of atrial fibrillation by those who take alendronate, or its name brand counterpart, Fosomax.

Researchers compared more than 700 women with atrial fibrillation had who had taken alendronate with those who had not and found that women who had ever taken the popular drug for osteoporosis are at 86 per cent higher risk of atrial fibrillation, a condition where the top two chambers of the heart, quiver and beat rapidly instead of rhythmically.

The most serious complication of atrial fibrillation can be stroke, caused by blood accumulating in the atria, forming a clot; a piece of which can break off and travel to the brain. Other symptoms include rapid heart rate, palpitations in the chest and shortness of breath. In Canada alone, more than three million prescriptions for alendronate were dispensed from retail drug stores in one year.
