Ford Motor Co. Gas Tank FiresFord Police Cars, Ford Lincoln Town Cars, Crown Victoria, and Mercury Grand Marquis
A class action lawsuit has been filed against Ford Motor Co. on behalf of city and county police agencies and other Florida "political subdivisions" that buy or lease the company's Crown Victoria Police Interceptors, model years 1992 to the present. The suit alleges that the vehicles are unsafe, and that a number have exploded in flames when hit from behind.
Ford Gas Tank Fires in the NewsIn a related case, Ford settles out of court in a lawsuit in which 3 women died in a Ford Lincoln Town Car fire. The Ford Lincoln Town Car, the Crown Victoria, the Mercury Grand Marquis and Ford Police Cars all have gas tanks in the trunk. The Police Cars have been outfitted with a protective shield around the tank to prevent explosion upon impact. The civilian cars have not had the option for this gas tank protection. In 2005, a woman won a $43 million lawsuit against Ford after her husband died in a fire which was caused by rear-end impact.
