FDA Issues Warning for Diabetes Medication Liraglutide (Victoza)

Washington, DC: The FDA has issued a warning regarding Liraglutide (Victoza), a drug used in the treatment of diabetes, and a possible risk for thyroid cancer and pancreatitis.

Liraglutide is approved for use as adjunct therapy to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in type 2 diabetes.

Studies done in rats show that liraglutide causes thyroid C-cell tumors, when exposed to the drug in clinically similar doses to those administered in humans. However, no association has been proven in humans, although clinical trials show some patients developed papillary thyroid carcinomas. Additionally, liraglutide is associated with a higher rate of pancreatitis than other diabetes medications. Consequently, the FDA recommends patient monitoring after starting liraglutide or raising the dosage, for symptoms including persistent severe abdominal pain

According to media reports, the FDA found that a recent evaluation of some primary care providers showed the providers were unaware of the serious risks associated with liraglutide.
