EPA Investigates Imprelis Herbicide

Washington, DC: The Environmental Protection Agency has begun gathering information on a recent spate of deaths of thousands of evergreen trees that may be linked to the use of DuPont's recently approved herbicide Imprelis. The problem is national in scope, costing some businesses tens of thousands of dollars.

Imprelis is used by landscapers to kill broadleaf weeds such as dandelions and clover and is believed to be environmentally friendly. However, recent reports have emerged of thousands of Norway spruces and eastern white pines dying on golf courses, playing fields, cemeteries and private lawns that were treated with Imprelis. Initial reports of dying trees surfaced about the end of May, 2011.

In June the EPA began gathering information on the tree deaths from officials in the states where Imprelis is approved—everywhere except California and New York. "E.P.A. is taking this very seriously," the agency said in a statement.

Imprelis was conditionally approved for sale by the federal EPA in October 2010. It is only sold lawn care professionals.
