A federal lawsuit against Elgin School District U46 alleges hostile treatment toward minority students and parents from the school's teachers. This new filing is an amended complaint seeking class action status. More allegations charge disproportionate referrals of minority students to the alternative high school which provides inferior academic opportunities; too few neighborhood school seats for children living in minority neighborhoods; failure to identify students in need of limited English proficiency services; and improperly allowing students to leave those services before they are academically ready.
