Seniors deserve to be safe from harm, but every year more than 2 million seniors are reported to be victims of physical or psychological abuse and neglect. And millions of more cases probably go unreported.
"Elders who are ill, frail, disabled, mentally impaired, or depressed are at greater risk of abuse, not only in nursing homes, but in their own homes.
Physical abuse can include slapping, shoving, restaining, pinching, burning, biting, beating, rape, over or under medicating, depriving food, or exposing the elder to severe weather.
Emotional abuse ranges from name-calling, ignoring, intimidating, insulting and threatening that causes mental anguish and distress.
Caregiver neglect can include failure to provide food, water, clothing, medications, assistance or help with personal hygiene.
Seniors may also be subjected fo financial exploitation such as failure to pay their bills, or manage their money, embezzlement, fraud, forgery, forced property transfers, improper use of powers of attorney, purchasing items without permission, denying access to the elder's own money and scams involving health services, mortgages and financial managers.
Signs of physical abuse can include bruises around neck or arms, rope marks or welts on wrists or ankles, repeated unexplained injuries, dismissive attitude of staff, sunken eyes, weight loss, extreme thirst, bed sores.
The elder may be uncommunicative, unresponsive, fearful or suspicious, evasivness.
Signs of sexual abuse can be unexplained vaginal or anal bleeding, bloody underware, bruised breasts, venereal disease or vaginal infections.
Indications of financial exploitation can be large withdrawals from their bank accounts, change in financial behavior, signatures on checks that don't match the elder's.
