Discrimination: Race, Gender, Religion, Age, Disability etc.

There are many types of discrimination cases, including racial discrimination, religious discrimination, age discrimination, gender discrimination, sexual orientation discrimination, and more. Typically these forms of discrimination occur when a person is attempting to secure services or employment. Discrimination lawsuits can be filed against a business, government entities, co-workers, teachers, or other persons.

Discrimination Examples
Discrimination is defined as unfair treatment of a person or a group based on prejudice or bias judgment. Examples of Discrimination cases: discrimination
  • Racial or national origin discrimination: bias treatment based on characteristics of one's race or birth place, such as physical characteristics, language, culture, or ancestry.

  • Religious discrimination: discrimination based on one's religious beliefs or practices. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) states that this is the second fastest growing discrimination class.

  • Age discrimination or Ageism: discrimination against a person or group based on age, typically against the elderly.

  • Gender or Sexual Orientation discrimination: unfair treatment of an individual or group based on prejudice toward their gender or sexual orientation.

  • Disability discrimination: discrimination against a person's disabilities, including physical, mental, and learning disabilities or chronic illnesses.

  • Pregnancy discrimination: unfair treatment of women in the workplace where job security, promotions, and wages are at risk before, during, or after pregnancy. The EEOC states that this is the fastest growing discrimination class.

  • Price discrimination: charging different prices to different individuals or groups for the same product or service.

  • Reverse discrimination: unfair treatment of an individual or group that is traditionally in the majority.

Laws Against Discrimination
Throughout U.S. history the government has passed multiple acts to prevent against discrimination:
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964 the first of many legislations banning discrimination based on race, color, religion, gender, or national origin.

  • Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 - protects persons 40 years old or older from employment discrimination and also sets guidelines for employment benefits and pensions.

  • Civil Rights Act of 1968 - prohibits any discrimination (race, religion, sex, handicap, family status and national origin) to affect the sale, rental or financing of housing.

  • Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 - protects women from being fired or not considered for employment or promotions due to a current or future pregnancy.

  • Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 - prohibits discrimination based on an individual's disability. This law protects those with physical and mental disabilities and chronic illnesses such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, or epilepsy.

Secretary Alleges Firing was Politically Motivated

Class-action status awarded in 3M Age Discrimination Suit

On Tuesday April 15, 2008, a lawsuit against 3M for age discrimination was awarded class-action status in a case that could affect approximately 6,000 employees over the age of 45. The suit was filed by five plaintiffs 3 ½ years ago that alleged the 3M CEO, Jim McNerney, showed favoritism toward younger workers by implementing termination policies that harmed older workers, affected pay, hampered the ability to receive a promotion, and denied training. Albertson’s Sued by EEOC for Discrimination

On March 28, 2008, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed a lawsuit in Denver, with the U.S. District Court of Colorado, against Albertson's LLC that alleges that the retailer retaliated against employees at the distribution center located in Aurora, Colorado. Books for Less Case Closed

Books for Less has recently been embroiled in a legal battle with twenty-one prior employees. Thirteen of the twenty-one employees had been in the employ of the book giant's Blawnox warehouse. DEC-31-07: A tenured professor has filed a discrimination lawsuit against New Mexico Highlands University and its former president alleging the president tried to eliminate non-Hispanic faculty members. The university has already settled three discrimination lawsuits. [SUN-NEWS: DISCRIMINATION]
