Class-action status awarded in 3M Age Discrimination Suit
On Tuesday April 15, 2008, a lawsuit against 3M for age discrimination was awarded class-action status in a case that could affect approximately 6,000 employees over the age of 45. The suit was filed by five plaintiffs 3 ½ years ago that alleged the 3M CEO, Jim McNerney, showed favoritism toward younger workers by implementing termination policies that harmed older workers, affected pay, hampered the ability to receive a promotion, and denied training. Books for Less has recently been embroiled in a legal battle with twenty-one prior employees. Thirteen of the twenty-one employees had been in the employ of the book giant's Blawnox warehouse. An investigation in underway at a religious school near Topeka, KS after alleged discrimination was launched against a female referee at St. Mary's Academy twenty-five miles northwest of Topeka. A Topsham, Vermont man has been awarded a large sum of money in an age discrimination lawsuit in which he claims he was denied a job as a town road foreman because of his age. The man, James "Bucky" Spooner was awarded $241,119 by an Orange County Superior Court jury as a result of his claim.

Michigan and Palm Beach County Ban Transgender Discrimination
Michigan's Governor, Jennifer M. Granholm, recently issued an order that bars discrimination against state workers based on their "gender identity or expression". The resolution states, "State employment practices and procedures that encourage nondiscriminatory and equal employment practices provide desirable models for the private sector and local governments".
