New Nursing Home Abuse Data

The Attorney General of Iowa has made public the state records detailing the names of nursing home employees who were fired for abusing elderly and disabled people. However, it remains unclear as to whether or not files that were sealed in the nine month period will remain off limits to the public.

Nine months ago state court judges began to restrict access to this information, based on a new interpretation of a 17-year-old state law that protects the confidentiality of known abusers.

This new decision means that hundreds of people who have loved ones in care facilities may be able to to find out if abuse has taken place. For example, one of the cases where offenders names were sealed involved the theft of $1,000 in gift cards and cash from an elderly patient. This person could now be working in another facility, and no one would know that that person had a criminal record.
