Darvocet / Darvon
Darvon (Propoxyphene) and Darvocet (Acetaminophen and Propoxyphene) are in a class of drugs called narcotic analgesics or opioids and are prescribed to reduce pain, such as chronic arthritis. Other brands include Propacet and Wygesic.
Originally introduced by Eli Lilly in the 1950s, Darvon became one of America's most popular prescription drugs in the early 1970s, averaging about 39 million prescriptions per year. During that time, research groups began linking Darvon with thousands of deaths each year and the Health Research Group demanded a federal ban on the drug.
Since then, the FDA has not recalled the drug but has put several limitations on how and when the drug should be taken. Research shows that Darvon may be no more effective in relieving pain than aspirin but its side effects may be deadly.
The negative side effects of Darvon, Darvocet and all other opioids can include accidental or suicidal overdose, severe respiratory depression, addiction, addiction-related withdrawal symptoms, and potential risk of death when taken in large doses or in combination with other prescription drugs or alcohol. Common analgesics include Morphine, Codeine, and Vicodin.
Currently, Propoxyphene is restricted in the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Ireland. Research from 1992-1999 indicated hundreds of deaths each year linked to Propoxyphene poisoning in Sweden. HealthCanada states that Propoxyphene is not recommended for the long term treatment of chronic pain and it is not recommended for elderly patients.
Medical professionals worry about the severe risks of these drugs, especially when new evidence has pulled similar drugs off the market: Palladone, Duragesic Pain Patch, Vioxx, and Bextra.
July 2005, aaiPharma Inc. sold its pain drug division, which included Darvon and Darvocet, to Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals Inc.
