CertainTeed Shingles

CertainTeed ShinglesAn investigation is underway regarding CertainTeed Horizon asphalt shingles from the 1990s. The shingles have been documented to be defective from the manufacturer by hundreds of customers. People with these shingles note extensive deterioration within 5 year including curling, pitting, cracking, and gutters filled with thick muck. CertainTeed usually provides a 25-30 year warranty, unfortunately most people will have lost the paperwork or moved before the shingles start their premature deterioration.

Extreme temperature swings caused by sudden thunderstorms and hail storms may cause what is known as "thermal shock". In these cases, when the roof deck expands and contracts in response to a 60-100 F change in temperature, within a very short time period, the shingle seal may break or loosen. As well, inadequate or lack of ventilation can negatively impact the performance of roofing systems. Expansion and contraction of the roof deck due to moisture absorption and drying may cause the seal to break loose.

premature failure of shingles to include leakage and deterioration. roof installed 2011 and the insurance adjuster thought they were the original roof installed in 1992. I usually do not keep old records past 5 years and was not able to show paper work proving the 2011 roof installation. the insurance adjuster also denied my claim based on that assumption.

I filled out forms, submitted proper info and never heard back from anyone. I was thoroughly disgusted by the disaster using Certainteed shingles caused. It didn't seem fair to sue the contractor. I had had remodeling done and decided to have new shingles at same time: this was several years back. First thing noticed was tons of shingle gravel coming off the roof, esp with heavy rains. Then pieces of broken shingle corners, then curling shingles, etc. I had NOT planned to put another roof on for $12000. in such a short time frame. When I made another inquiry, was told the company filed bankruptcy and no money for damages to consumer. Grrr.

Installed Certainteed Landmark fiberglass shingles, was supposed to be a 40 year rating yet, granules, deteriorating shingles showing wear down to the base layer, I filed a claim they offered $880, I have not signed it. These only lasted 13 years, now have to re-roof house in order to sell it since it would not clear inspection.

My roof was done in 1999 approx and within a few years shingles where falling off as well as the coating that is on there. I contacted the company and was told that the seal did not take and it was the installers fault. I was left high and getting wt. Now I have leaking areas in the house and I am sure the insulation that was blown in is all moldy and will have to be taken out and replaced. My shingles are curling up as well. It makes me sick to hear the rain fall down(Something I used to love) but now scared of the damage that is happening that I can't see. The name of Certainteed used to mean something good to me, now there is certainly no way I am going to use them. Looking at these post really scare me as well because it seems like they are not standing behind there horrible-faulty product. Shame on you Certainteed-shame, shame.

Hal Gwyn - I am experiencing the same situation as you have. Our CertainTeed shingles are 30 year shingles and were installed in 12/2008. I actually filed my claim last year and rec'd a little over $900; however, I have not accepted the funds yet. They provided me a coupon to submit to them after I purchased their shingles for re-roofing; however, that WON"T be happening. (I plan to use GAF this time.) This amount in no way attempts to cover the damage/labor, etc caused by their faulty shingles.

Roof installed in 2008 with 30yr CertainTeed shingles. After only 7 years the granules began washing off the roof and leaving big spots of bare fiberglass. I thought it had been hail damage and filed a insurance claim. State Farm declined the claim and said it is defective, not storm damage. I appealed the claim, State Farm and an independant roofing company reassesed the roof and did in fact determine that it is a defective roof. There is no hail damage to any of the aluminum vent or ridge caps and do not have any dents. I went through the claim process with CertainTeed and they have offered about $800 total. The roof is a 30 year roof and is failing after on 7 years. This roof cost about $8500 and they are only offering $800. They also offered a rebate if I purchase more CertainTeed product. I, obviously will never purchase any CertainTeed and hope the message gets around. Money is too hard to earn.

Every shingle on the roof is loosing all the sand coverings and the tips are all curling up. It is a pathetic sight. I filed a claim last May 2009 with our insurance (State Farm) and they sited faulty shingles as the problem. I just want them replaced.

Severely deteriorated shingles, they were put on the home shortly before I purchased it.

We need a new roof. We have mold in the attic. We had to repaint two interior walls that were completely peeling before we realized it was because of the roof.

I have multiple areas where the shingles are curled up and are completely off. The shingles have caused water to leak through and cause mold in my garage

The shingles have deteriorated so bad I am forced to replace the entire roof before the roof begins to leak and damage my house. When I contacted Certainteed, they told me I would have to remove a section of the damaged shingles from my roof and send the shingles to them. I dropped the issue when I sensed Certainteed was not willing to address the problem in a reasonable manner.

Shingles have failed over most of roof with degranulation, curling and cracking. Have already replaced portion of roof due to water leaking into the interior of my home.

I will have to hire a roofing contractor and have the entire roof torn off and re-shingled at an approximate cost of 6-8 thousand dollars due to faulty CertainTeed brand shingles that failed. CertainTeed only covers a prorated warranty and will not cover labor costs. The labor should be covered due to my requirement to replace because of their faulty product.

The roofing shingles are curling, the grit cover is totally coming off and I already have water damage in the living room ceiling.

Roof is falling apart before its warrenty period. We are year 14 of a 25 year warrenty period.

Shingles are cupped, pitting badly, and have lost an extreme amount of stones on them.

When we were having our house reassessed, we noticed the assessor taking pictures of the roof. After looking at the roof, we could see that the shingles were going bad. After calling the contractor that did the roof he said that they were Certain Teed shingles and there was a problem with them.

The shingles are curled and the aggregate has filled my rain gutters. I had a bid to replace them that was nearly $10k. After calculating the warranty, my out of pocket will be over $7k. I work for a building material manufacturer (26-years)as a Quality Manager and have traveled on many product complaints. Our warranty covers everything when a defect has been found, including labor, material replacement, cleanup, and even hotel if the homeowner has been displaced. Their warranty falls extremely short of what their warranty implies. How do I have them take responsibility? Please help me!

I have to replace my roof this year, which I should not have to for at least another 10 years. It is so bad that I am afraid it will start leaking.

Curling shingles on east and south elevations of roof. Hail removed granulars and exposed black subsurface and caused curling. Insurance hail damage claim denied due to defective shingles. Trouble getting roof covered by new company until roof is replaced.

Possible replacement of entire roof very soon. Repair charges of less than $200. so far. Labor removing existing shingles and replacing with new in near future
plus cost of new shingles. Shingles had a twenty five year warranty now installed in 1996.

I recently experienced a roof leak Aug 2007 and the insurance company sent out a recommended contractor. This contractor indicated the the shingles are deteriorating and very fragile (curling, cracking, leaking, blistering, balding and degranulation). He is recommending I replace the roof. I did have some interior drywall damage as well.

I filed a claim under the warranty with CertainTeed in August of 2007 and the claim was denied. The CertainTeed claims adjuster told me the damage was caused by algae and they weren't going to pay my claim. The claims adjuster also refused to return the samples of shingles I mailed to CertainTeed in Pennsylvania as I mentioned to him I might file a lawsuit. I plan on contacting the Mass. and PA state attorneys generals as CertainTeed is wrongfully holding onto my property.

I would like the public to know that this company is unethical and that their actions are potentially illegal (wrongfully taking someone else's property).

I bought my home 4 years ago with an 8 year old roof (30 year roof). I noticed the shingles curling and had a contractor and my insurance inspector out to check hail damage. I was then informed that these shingles are defective CertainTeed shingles that are failing.

I have done tons of research, sent in a claim...awaiting a response, which I already know will be absolutely INSULTING! I want FULL recovery for my damaged shingles (less than 10yrs old). I have the original paperwork from the install 10/97 and will sue for full recovery if necessary. A class action must result in complete tear off, replacement including labor and all components (shingles, ice/water, etc).

On the house there is cracking, and we already had to replace a small area, also our gutters have been filled with thick mud on numerous occasions. On the garage, the shingles look very warn. We are very disappointed in these shingles.

Certain Teed Sealdon 25 Shingles failed miserably after only 11 years by curling up and grit seperation.

The original owner of my home purchased and had CertainTeed Sealdon 25 shingles installed on 10/30/97. I purchased the home 10/2005. I have the original paperwork showing all of this data. My concern is timing. I will need to have work done on my roof as there is “end of life” evidence occurring in certain areas of my home’s roof. According to CertainTeed’s Warranty…as a subsequent owner, I am allowed only 2 years from the closing of my home to qualify for ANY warranty.

I have contacted the original contractor who installed the shingles on my roof. He has already come out and removed (2) full deteriorating shingles and replaced with (2) new – as part of the CertainTeed warranty claim. In the interim, I have contacted a number of local contractors to come and do an estimate. I am finding that each of these contractors in my area are well aware of the problems with the CertainTeed shingles from that timeframe. I was told the average “warranty” claim for my size home is only $750 for defective material. This, obviously, does not cover a $9000 remove/replacement PROBLEM!

I have had NO other work done, and I have contacted CertainTeed’s inquiring about the warranty policy…to no avail, other than complete the claim form and mail in the 2 shingles per their requirement.

I (as I am sure many others) would like to know if it we will be reimbursed a fair amount for our “defective” CertainTeed products. Please contact me as I would be willing to act as a Rep for the state of WI.

A little over a year ago, we noticed that the shingles on our roof needed to be replaced. They had started curling and lifting at that time. Since then, the curling has gotten worse, there are bald spots on the tiles, and we are noticing more and more granules on our sidewalk leading up to our front door. There is also a layer of granules in our gutters. We have been told that our roof looks like a 30-year old roof instead of one that was installed in 1998. Not thinking twice, we contacted our insurance company, who estimated the damaged between $800-$900 dollars for only the damaged sections. Shortly afterwards, we were contacted by the company that originally installed the shingles at build-time, and was told about the defective shingles. They sent an evaluation form and samples of the defective tiles to CertainTeed on our behalf. CertainTeed responded saying that they would only cover a little over $400 for the damaged tiles (less than half of what our insurance company quoted us to replace them). We are currently financially strapped and cannot afford to replace our roof in the near future, as we need to save up for, at minimum, the $1000.00 deductable required by our insurance company (who won't replace the entire roof, only the damaged sections). Just a short side note: most of the houses on our street have suffered the same fate, and some have already replaced their roofs within the past year.

Shingles were put on in 2001. They now are deteriorating extensively. We bought them as a 25 year shingle and in less than six years some shingles have deteriorated completely. After a rain our driveway is full of black residue as the shingles literally wash away. The shingles have curled badly. We are looking for justice. We will have to reroof. At least 2/3 of the cost is in labor. This is unfair and fraudulent. They need to stand behind their product.

We had Certainteed 25-year asphalt shingles installed on our new home in 1996. In 2002, we noticed some slight curling, but chocked that up to normal where and tear. Around 2005, we noticed a lot of curling of the shingles. Within the last two years, the shingles are starting to fall apart and we are finding a lot of tiny particles getting washed down our downspouts.

I did contact Certainteed and what they are offering right now to try and keep people quiet is ridiculous. A 45-minute phone call to their tech. service turned into a merry go round where most questions were left unanswered. We are now 134 months into our 330 month warranty and they are offering $549 as a settlement. They also offer a 'rebate coupon' which gives you $25 per square (100 sq. ft.) to put towards new Certainteed shingles. They told me that the $25 is based on a Blue Book national average cost of $30 per sq. However, I can find no one who would offer equivalent 25-year asphalt shingles for under $42 per sq.

Also, because they are faulty shingles, they need to be torn off of the roof. When I asked about some compensation for that, I was told that it wasn't their problem to deal with. I was also supposed to hear from the tech. service supervisor (not holding my breath) which hasn't happened yet.

It would be nice if Certainteed could be made an example out of. I mean, it's not like the roof only cost a few hundred dollars. This is a major deal and we may also end up having to replace other things if the shingles were allowing areas to leak(won't know that until they actually replace the shingles). Any assistance anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated. We live in a smaller community and I know others in town who are going through the same thing we are.

We have Certainteed shingles. We had our house built in 1996. We noticed the shingles began to curl in 2003. It is to the point we need to have them replaced. We have a 12/12 pitch on our roof and have 40 square of shingles. The total cost to have these shingles removed and replaced is $14,000.00. Certainteed has offered to $1,000.00 towards the replacement of these shingles. That is not acceptable to us.
