CertainTeed Shingles

An investigation is underway regarding CertainTeed Horizon asphalt shingles from the 1990s. The shingles have been documented to be defective from the manufacturer by hundreds of customers. People with these shingles note extensive deterioration within 5 year including curling, pitting, cracking, and gutters filled with thick muck. CertainTeed usually provides a 25-30 year warranty, unfortunately most people will have lost the paperwork or moved before the shingles start their premature deterioration.

Extreme temperature swings caused by sudden thunderstorms and hail storms may cause what is known as "thermal shock". In these cases, when the roof deck expands and contracts in response to a 60-100 F change in temperature, within a very short time period, the shingle seal may break or loosen. As well, inadequate or lack of ventilation can negatively impact the performance of roofing systems. Expansion and contraction of the roof deck due to moisture absorption and drying may cause the seal to break loose.
