Bouncy Houses Contain Toxic Lead Levels Report Finds

San Francisco, CA: California Attorney General, Jerry Brown, has filed a lawsuit over toxic lead levels associated with bouncy houses and bouncy castles – those inflatable houses that kids just love to play in for hours at a stretch.

According to a report in the NYTimes the lawsuit was prompted by an investigation done by the Center for Environmental Health in Oakland, CA, which found lead levels in the vinyl – the stuff that puts the bounce in the bouncy houses – varied from 5,000 parts per million to 29,000, well above the federal limit of 90 to 300 parts per million.

In an interview with the NYTimes Dr. Megan Schwarzman, a family physician and an associate director at the Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry, said that she had not seen the test results, but that there was no safe level of lead exposure for children.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, lead exposure can result in behavioural problems, disabilities, and exposure at very high concentrations can result seizures, coma and death.
