Johnson & Johnson

In November 2005, U.S. regulators warned that the Ortho Evra birth control patch exposes women to 60% more hormones than do oral contraceptives and may cause blood clots. A February 2006 study indicated that the patch doubled clot risk compared with the pill. One group of nearly 30 women filed a lawsuit against the pharmaceutical company claiming they developed blood clots after using Ortho Evra birth control patch. A confidential agreement has been made.

Other users have filed about 140 lawsuits claiming that they suffered strokes or clots in the legs or lungs. The company has not disclosed the settlements or any possible reserves for Ortho Evra sufferers. (May-13-06) [LOS ANGELES TIMES]
