Honolulu, HI: On January 14, 2005 Shalay Peterson have birth to a healthy baby boy through elective Caesarian section. Pediatrician Army Maj. Danielle Bird unknowingly administered carbon dioxide instead of oxygen to little Izzy Peterson. It wasn't until 42 minutes had passed and the tank was nearly empty when someone realized the horrible mistake. Izzy survived with massive brain damage and requires 24 hour attendant care. He is fed through a gastrostomy and breathes through a tracheostomy. His parents filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against the hospital and claimed Bird would have had to adjust the upright regulator of the free-standing cylinder clearly labeled carbon dioxide. A federal judge awarded nearly $16.5 million to the family of the severely brain-damaged child. Tripler Army Medical Center accepted responsibility for this tragic incident and respects the decision.
