I just found out about this class action against Certainteed. My shingles were purchased and installed in 2002 and show definite curling etc. Am I eligible to be included in this law suit? The shingles are "Custom Sealdon 30".

We just learned about this class action against Certainteed, yesterday. Our shangles were purchased by our builder when our house was built in 1989 with a 35 year warranty. They are now showing definite curling, extensive cracking, etc. and are starting to come off Are we elibible to be included in this law suit? or how do we file a claim and get any kind of assistance with this problem before it becomes severe?

I purchased a home in October 2011 and am now finding out that I do have organic shingles and had one contractor say they were Certain Teed. They are curling on the south side of my home but the other side is ok. Curling and some holes from blistering. What can I do in this case. I'm not sure if I'm still warrantied. How can I find out the year it was installed and the type of shingles?

  • Bob Sawmiller August 8, 2012 at 12:47 pm

I have 2 buildings with these shingles. House and garage. My parents do also. I didn't know there was a claim allowed on them. What can I do now ? They are in terrible condition, especially where the sun hits them directly.

We bought our home in 1999 and I just found out about the class action on this. How come I was not informed before????

  • Jim Diemer October 13, 2013 at 6:39 pm

These shingles were installed as a replacement following a hail storm. I talked to my contractor and he verified the shingles were the ones in question and installed in 2000. They were a 20 year shingle and after about 10 years they started to curl. Now they are leaking and my roof is tarped in order to get through a Minnesota winter. My insurance company has notified me that they will only pay 30% of a loss.
I heard about this law suit only 3 days ago, and was not notified. If CertainTeed doesn't want to make it right then there is the power of face book and email. Let the world know about it. I will sent a note to the above address and see if I get a response.

I just found about these defective shingles 2 weeks ago when I had someone to come out and give me an estimate on replacing the roof due to the fact they were coming off and curling up.When I contacted my insurance company about my roof and told them what the roofing company had told me they said that the lawsuit was settled in August of this year and no one else cild sub,it claims. My question is this true.

Just heard about this lawsuit when we tried purchasing more "New Horizon CertainTeed" shingles from Lowes. I don't see where New Horizon is mentioned here. Are they included in the lawsuit?

  • becky dombrowski July 18, 2014 at 11:02 pm

yes I heard that New Horizon is also included.

  • Joseph R Hmielewski August 17, 2014 at 3:26 pm

I just found out about the class action suit and have Certain Teed shingles that were installed about seven years ago. The shingles on the south side of my roof have cupped and need to be replaced.

  • Sam Morris October 29, 2014 at 2:44 pm

I have been denied 2 times and have asked for an independent contractor come to my home. No response in over a month. I filed over 2 months ago, and these people I talk to lie about the shingles I sent them. They say the plastic on the back of the shingles did not say certain Teed, but I took the shingles off myself, and there were no plastic on the back. How can they be so crooked and get away with this. It is nothing but a sham.

  • Michele Gregg November 12, 2014 at 6:36 pm

I bought my house with 5 year old shingles in 2008. They just started to curl last year 2013. I got a new roof and filed a claim and thought at LEAST I would be covered under the warranty of the shingle (that I sent in). I was denied and told that since the house/roof was transferred 2008, I only had a 2 year warranty from date of sale (fyi 30 year shingle). So much for a 30 year warranty. What a CROCK. He then said I only had till 2011 to file a lawsuit. I said: 1. I didn’t have problems with the roof till 2013 so how could I file a claim in 2011 and 2nd) according to you I only had until 2010. That is so unfair what about the rest of us after 2011!! I agree this is just soooo wrong. My roofer even put a new CertainTeed roof on with a lifetime warranty! So much for customer service!! I’m disgusted! what can we do??

    • Carla Dacon January 21, 2017 at 1:40 pm

wondering the same thing. I know this is an old post….but just noticed the whole SIDE of my house had missing shingles. It’s a rental that my husband and I owned when we had the shingles put on. I got it in the divorce settlement in 2008. I looked up the tax returns and I see he put the roof on in 2001. I remember thinking….at least I won’t have to worry about a roof! And now I do. One whole slope is almost missing….ugh

  • Scott Christ December 5, 2014 at 9:17 pm

My roof was replaced in 2003 because of hail damage.. This past year all my neighbors had there roofs replaced because of another storm. I have had mine inspected this summer and the appraiser said my roof looked terrible for being only 11 years old.
Upon him saying this I looked for myself . They are split and cracked like crazy. I joined a class action lawsuit and the process by the shingle company is un real.
Taking a full shingle off and mailing it in ? Seriously does this have to be done? I have no replacements for it. I was told there is companies doing this to help with the suit ? Is this a scam or something people have had done?
    Just wondering
    Thank you for any help.

  • Marty Reyes January 24, 2015 at 8:39 pm

Any updates on this? I went to the certainteedshinglesettlement.com website. I’ve already pulled down a couple of full shingles and boxed them up to send in. Then I saw this calculator at certainteedshinglesettlement.com/settlementcalculator.cfm and they are only giving like 3-4,000 dollars back. What’s with that? We had a city grant program that put on the shingles, they started to fall apart about 2.5 years later. No money to put new ones on, come on, without the money from the grant, we would not have put them on. So now, we cannot afford to replace them, water is leaking inside the house, and the insurance cancelled our insurance because of the roof. So no insurance and a lovey Certain Teed roof with shingles falling off every day. So what do we do? I know one thing, not using Certain Teed anything anymore! If any one knows of an alternate solution, please, please let me know.

It is too late to file in this class action law suit so what do I do now that my shingles are curling and looking really bad. The shingles have been on for 14 years and I thought they were guaranteed for 25. They are Certainteed Sealdon 25 Organic. It has been this last year they started to curl. Can I get any compensation to help pay for a new roof?

  • Sandra Mills July 21, 2015 at 9:30 am

I have two layers for shingles on my roof. I do not know if they are organic but I found out yesterday when I got an estimate for a new roof that both layers are Certaintee shingles..
The last layer was put on in 2008 and I need another roof again. Now what? Is there any money for me? I do not have paper work but would a roofer who has dealt with Certinteed know?

    Thank you.

    • Carolyn September 8, 2016 at 4:08 pm

      Sandra,

Go to the CertainTeed website and file a claim based on the “warranty”. I can tell you from experience, you are only going to receive a minimal amount. You will be required to send in two shingles and prove your residency in the home, etc. May need to get your Contractor to re-write you an invoice. My roof was installed in 12/2008 with CertainTeed and I filed a claim in July 2015. CertainTeed has offered to pay just under $1,000 for a $7,000 roof which was suppose to carry a 30 year warranty; however, I have NOT accepted their offer yet. Good Luck!!!

      • Phil January 26, 2017 at 1:59 pm

  • gerry November 19, 2015 at 10:44 pm

I was just advised by my homeowners insurance company my policy cannot be renewed, due to my shingles are curled and ” defective” . where do i turn? I had these contractor installed.

  • mike niemeier April 26, 2016 at 2:23 pm

We purchased new construction in March of 2007 several roofers have looked at my roof and told me it is Certainteed horizonal organic shingles! we just had a new roof installed yesterday. (4-25-2016) The roofer gave me most of a defective shingle! Do I have any recourse? My insurance co does not replace defective shingles!

I just noticed this now. My roof is 20yrs old and shot. Has 30 yr warranty. Shingles are all curled and in shady spot, so not from harsh sun. Think I can get a 1/3 back?

  • peace February 2, 2017 at 2:56 am

just heard about this settlement. complete tear off on my roof in 1999 after I bought the house. I have been repairing this roof since installation and not its so torn, so curled wind blew some shingle away with few years and big gaps and opening around the shingles
how do I go about this. A roofer told me its organic certainteed and I am entitled to new roof.

  • Lenora March 23, 2017 at 11:44 pm

I just found out about the recall of the shingles on my house. No one contacted me about this recall. Now I need a roof and I understand that the class action law suit is over, what can I do? Please I need help.

  • Milltrene Brodie Newell June 22, 2017 at 10:41 pm

I just found out I can not get a roofing fixed by my roofing company because of the shingles that are on the roof. The roofing company can not guarantee their work with the old shingles on the house an because of the settlement.

  • Susan November 21, 2017 at 1:23 pm

I just found out the shingles on my garage are organic. My garage is ruined. I feel people that didn’t know should still be compensated. What can be done??? Can a new lawsuit be filed?

  • Michele Duppenthaler April 17, 2018 at 6:03 pm

Well, the good news is they gave us $150 per square foot for labor and replacing the shingles. The bad news is this defect destroyed all the plywood. So 69 sheets later we are out the money on the plywood and Certainteed covers nothing on that, pretty crappy when it was your shingles that caused the damage! Won’t recommend their product after how they back it.

  • Beverly Jacobson September 18, 2018 at 10:16 pm

I do not understand why this was no sent out to customers. I will be 79 so I do not get up on my roof to check it out. Now I must pay out of my ss to put roof on. Ins would only pay a small amt. this is a duplex and we are both out. Since home pride in Omaha nebr did not notify us I think u both are crooked

  • Nancy Reese February 5, 2019 at 6:14 pm

We put our roof on our home in 2000 and, also, on our shed/garage. We have had 3 incidents of the shingles coming up with one being about a month ago. Why are we just now hearing about a class action suit for these shingles? Are we still able to send in a claim form? These shingles are discontinued & we can not match them. Our roofs will have to be completely replaced to match up. We did not have the insurance that pays to replace the entire roof when the shingles can’t be matched. What action can we take & against whom?

  • rick willoweit March 26, 2019 at 11:44 am

We constructed a new home in 2003, installed with Certainteed Horizon shingles. The roof has substantially failed and requires replacement. What action should I take to recover under the settlement agreement? Thank you.
