Gig Economy Company Settles Wage Theft Lawsuit for $2.1 Million

San Francisco, CA Qwick, a gig economy online staffing company for hotel and restaurant workers, is required to pay its misclassified California workers $1.5 million in restitution and convert all workers to employees. This agreement settles a misclassification lawsuit brought by the City Attorney of San Francisco and it significantly reclassifies thousands of workers – permanently. Misclassified as independent contractors, workers will now be entitled to employee rights and benefits.

Meat Processors Pay $127.2 Million to Settle Wage-Fixing Case

Lincoln, NE Plaintiffs in a wage-fixing class-action lawsuit asked a judge in Colorado federal court to preliminarily approve deals with two meat processors. In early March, Brazil’s JBS, the world’s largest beef producer, agreed to pay $55 million and Arkansas-based Tyson will pay $72.25 million to settle a complaint involving several companies that allegedly participated in a nationwide scheme to fix and depress wages for meat plant workers.

Glass House Slapped with California Labor Lawsuit

Los Angeles, CA Glass House Brands Inc. was slapped with a proposed class action lawsuit last month, alleging California labor law violations. A former worker accuses the major California marijuana producer of engaging in a systematic pattern of wage violations, including unpaid overtime and unrealistic workloads.

California Drywall Company Slapped with Wage & Hour Lawsuit – Again.

Riverside County, CA West Coast Drywall & Co is doing it again: underpaying its piece-rate field employees and instructing them to underreport their hours. The California drywall company settled a lawsuit for the same allegations in 2017, but just two years after the settlement, the company repeated the same California labor law violations. According to this lawsuit filed by Attorney General Rob Bonta, since August 2019 the company has shorted about 7,000 workers by failing to pay wages owed, overtime, and more.

PAGA To Face Critical Test on November 2024 Ballot

Sacramento, CA On November 5, 2024, Californians will choose whether to preserve the Private Attorneys General Act (PAGA) in its present form or replace it with the proposed California Fair Pay and Employer Accountability Act (FPEAA). Since it became law in 2003, PAGA has been an important element of many California labor lawsuits, and is often understood to function as an important deterrent to employer wage theft. Roughly 5,000 PAGA notices are filed annually.

Walmart Workers ask California Judge to OK $2.25M settlement

Santa Clara, CA Over 1,700 Walmart employees last month asked a California federal judge to approved a revamped $2.25 million unpaid overtime settlement. The proposed California labor class action was revised to base the class members' payouts on total earnings rather than weeks worked.

Two Popular California Bakeries Slammed with Wage Theft Lawsuits

Los Angeles, CA Two famous bakeries, Firebrand Artisan Breads in the Bay Area, and Sweet Lady Jane in the L.A. area, are both accused of withholding the dough from their employees, and now face California wage theft lawsuits. Filed in Alameda County Superior Court under California’s Private Attorneys General Act, the lawsuit allows employees to seek penalties for labor violations on behalf of themselves and other workers.

Nurses Filed Unpaid Wages Lawsuit Against U.S. Nursing Corp

Denver, CO Two nurses last month filed a proposed class action against U.S. Nursing Corp, claiming they were underpaid while filling in for workers on strike at Kaiser Permanente South Bay Medical Center last October. And it’s not the first class action facing U.S. Nursing.

UNITE HERE Dispute with Sky Chefs Back on the Plate

Los Angeles, CA UNITE HERE International Union's California labor lawsuit against Sky Chefs Inc. is back on the plate. The Ninth Circuit ruling in December reversed U.S. District Judge Percy Anderson's dismissal in May 2022 of the Union's lawsuit which challenged unilateral wage and benefits changes made by the airline catering company on its employees at Los Angeles International Airport.
