Chlorine Spill at Cal Expo in Sacramento Causes Hospitalizations

. By Email to a friendEmail
Sacramento, CA: Several people became ill at Raging Waters park in Cal Expo in Sacramento Monday afternoon, some of whom were hospitalized for respiratory issues, resulting from a chlorine accident.

According to new reports, a large amount of chlorine was released into the park pool as a result of a mechanical malfunction. As a result, nine children, eight adults and three park employees became ill, 16 of whom were taken to local hospitals, Sacramento City Fire Department Battalion Chief Niko King told ABC News 10.

Christy and Mark Schiller, who were at the park with their five-year old son Vance, told News 10 that Vance could hardly breathe. "He was crying very hard. His throat was completely burning, so it was bad. Profuse coughing. You know, like involuntary, my son could not get his breath and they [the lifeguards] administered oxygen right away," said Mark Schiller.

Park lifeguards responded right away, separating people who were severely affected so they could receive first aid treatment by paramedics.
