Another class action lawsuit against Ortho Evra Makers
A class-action lawsuit has been filed against Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, Inc., a division of Johnson and Johnson Inc., on behalf of the estate of a 26-year-old woman. According to the suit, she died from an acute pulmonary embolism after using the Ortho Evra birth control patch from November 26, 2002 to July 8, 2003. The suit was filed on July 13, 2006 in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. On July 8, 2003, the young woman experienced difficulty breathing and collapsed in her home. When the paramedics arrived they found the woman in acute respiratory distress. She was taken to the emergency room at St. John Macomb Hospital in Michigan. After failure to respond to CPR and other life-saving measures she was pronounced dead that evening. An autopsy revealed the cause of death as an acute pulmonary embolism. Pulmonary embolism is a sudden blockage in a lung artery, usually due to a blood clot that has travelled to the lung from the leg, but clots can also form in the pelvic vein. Recent reports have indicated that the risk of developing blood clots, pulmonary embolism, heart attack and stroke may be significantly higher with the Ortho Evra patch than with oral contraceptive use. In fact, the patch has been linked to the deaths of at least seventeen young American women over the past two years The FDA has logged 9,116 reports of adverse reactions to the patch in a 17-month period. While Ortho Tri-Cyclen - a birth control pill - had only 1,237 adverse reactions reported over six years. During a 12-month period, 44 serious injuries or deaths have been associated with Ortho Evra, whereas only 17 such reports were linked to the birth control pill during a similar time period. These statistics are even more damning when you consider the fact that Ortho Tri-Cyclen has six times the number of users of Ortho Evra. It is alleged that the drug company was aware of the increased medical risks associated with Ortho Evra before the drug was approved and that, once approved, the company failed to adequately warn patients about these risks. Maria Barela on I was on ortho novum for a total of 4 years and on depo provera for 1 year then on ortho again for another 3 years. I had many side effects and every time the dose was changed. I have developed cysts on both ovaries and twice I have had fibroid tumors, I had two of them removed 3 years ago. Did not decide to have a hysterctomy because I wanted to have one more child. Now the tumor came back and I will need to have uterus removed since the tumor has taken over. Therefore I will not be able to have that child I wanted. I blame all this on all that birth conrol I took and many years. Is there any lawsuit againts the manufacturers of this birth control? I will appreate your information.

Susan Knight on I was perscribed Ortho Cept October 23 2007 and had two pulmonary embolisms that caused me to loose a portion of my right lung two months later. These are deadly meds... They are third generation birth controll pills with senthetic hormones in them that are putting women at high risk of serious injury and death. Why hasn't anybody taken on these cases to better protect us!

Jennifer Frandsen on I was given Ortho-Novum in August of 2009 I began taking the medication in November of 2009 & by March 2010 I was in ICU with blood clots. I almost lost one of my legs due to the clot. I spent approximately 20 days in the hospital & was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis. For the rest of my life I have an increase chance of getting blood clots which could kill me I also will have to take medicine until the day I die to prevent me from getting more clots. How do I go about taking legal action against this company?This medical condition has affected my life in several ways none of which are good.

Stephanie Jaramillo on I am trying to find out some information about any types of lawsuits against the birth control pill Ortho-Novum. I starting taking the birth control pill back in October of 2009, and in less then a month I developed blood clots in both of my lungs and almost died. I suffered a pulmonary embolism and was hospitalized for a week and then placed on blood thinners for 6 months. As a result I can no longer take any type of birth control. Is there any information on a possible lawsuit against the makers of the Ortho-Novum birth control pill?
