Life Before and After Nexium

. By
Lake Placid, NY“Before taking Nexium I was in top athletic form,” says Alan, “but Nexium side affects have diminished my quality of life tremendously. I blame the drugmaker and my doctor’s negligence: how could they not warn people about Nexium fractures?”

Alan says his life is divided in two: before and after Nexium. And he is still reeling from the permanent damage he claims was caused by this acid-reflux medication.

“My typical day before taking Nexium included running about five miles and weight training for one hour,” he says. “On top of that I took several dance and body-conditioning classes a week. Needless to say I was in great shape and I continued my training after college. My biggest mistake was complaining to my doctor about heartburn.”

About a year after Alan started taking Nexium, he began to have muscle pains all over his body, but he chalked them up to working out so much. Until one night he turned over in bed and felt a sharp pain in his rib. An x-ray showed two cracked ribs. Not long after that, Alan was playing basketball and hurt his wrist. Back to the hospital and another x-ray revealed a fractured wrist. “What the heck was going on - I began to feel like an old man,” he says.

“These bone fractures were the most puzzling. They appeared suddenly and without any cause. I went online and Googled Nexium. At first glance the side effects were common and could be applied to just about any drug, such as headache and diarrhea. Next up I searched “Nexium side effects” and bingo! Included in a very long list was muscle pain, muscle weakness and broken bone.

“At that point I realized that the problems were being caused by Nexium. I stopped taking it, and within a few months, some of my muscle pains began to disappear. Thankfully, I am young enough that broken bones can heal. What happens to elderly people taking this drug?

“Even though I only took Nexium for just over a year, my health problems may never get better because there is likely permanent damage to my muscular-skeletal system. By stopping Nexium I stopped further deterioration and some of the pain. But shame on AstraZeneca for not taking this medication off the shelves. How could any drug company market a product with this staggering number of reported side effects?”

Nexium Fractures Lawsuits

On December 31, 2012, more than 500 plaintiffs filed a Nexium lawsuit in California Southern District Court (case no. 3:2012cv03083), claiming that they suffered bone problems from their use of the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) prescribed for the treatment of heartburn, acid-reflux and inflammation of the esophagus. The product liability suit alleges that the plaintiffs suffered various bone problems, including osteoporosis, bone deterioration and fractures after taking Nexium.

Earlier that same month, 39 bone injury lawsuits were consolidated in the Multidistrict Litigation MDL 2404 (Central District of California) by the U.S. Judicial Panel (In re. Nexium (Esomerprazole) Products Liability Litigation, MDL Docket No. 2404). Plaintiffs allege that AstraZeneca, the Nexium manufacturer, knew about the risks of broken bones but did not disclose the risks to the consumers so that they could continue selling more Nexium. The plaintiffs claim the drug caused osteoporosis, loss of bone density and/or Nexium bone fractures.

Increasingly, people who have suffered fractures are becoming aware that Nexium could be to blame. Attorneys are currently filing claims against AstraZeneca.

My Dr started me on 40 MG of Esomeprazole once a day about 2 months ago. After 3 days taking the pills I stared having the worst stomach cramps and dierrea I had ever had. I went back to my dr and he said would I rather have bleeding ulcers or take the pills? Two months later I'm still on the Esomeprazole. The dierrea is a little better but now I have back ache all down my back and leg aches. I tried to go off the medicine for two days after taking the medicine for 3 weeks but my original stomach pain which the Dr. Told me was stomach ulcer came right back. It does help the jawing pain under my Brest bone but I'm not sure which is worse the stomach cramps, dierrea, and back pain or the ulcers.

Ive been taking Nexium for atleast 15 yrs. I didnt know about any side affects until I read this article. I was trying to find out why I have severe pain in my hip, knees and even my foot. Its un bearable pain and feels like its in the bones up and down my leg. I have been taking asprin and tylonal for pain but it doesnt help much. I am having trouble walking and have trouble lifting my right leg to climb stairs or even get into the car. I think its the Nexium now. I take 2- 40 MG tablets a day. I am stopping it and will see if I get better. I have acid reflux and gerd badly. I will try over the counter again but it didnt work yrs ago and I had ulsers. I am a senior, they have talked about knee replacement, too.Is it the Nexium?

I took nexium for about 12 years. Before Nexium I ran 2 marathons. I was a runner since I was 10 and loved it - I'm now 48. Now, my hips hurt, my pelvis hurts, my lower back hurts terribly! I also have many digestive issues. I still try to stay active but now I have a hard time walking 2 miles. I had one hip surgery and 1 1/2 years ago but the doctor said my problems are much bigger and he was right. Every day I'm in pain and some days it's hard to get motivated to keep moving. If it wasn't for my 3 kids the pain might get the best of me. My doctor keeps telling me the meds are not the problem but for the last few years I've argued with him that it is. All he wants to do is give me more meds to cover up my pain and I so don't want to. The big drug companies have doctors brainwashed. Many doctors just give you drugs and don't even try to find out whats wrong anymore. I wish so bad I could have my health back! I hope some of these pains will get reversed over time...wishful thinking for sure.

I changed from another ppi to Nexium about 6 months ago. About two months ago I started getting muscle aches in different parts of my body that would not go away. I stopped exercising (Zumba) but it did not help. The muscle aches kept getting worse. I started thinking that it might be a side effect of some medication and the only one I had added was Nexium. After a lot of research I found that it was probably the cause due to the fact that it eliminates Magnesium from your body. I stopped Nexium and started taking magnesium supplemenst and my pains have diminished considerably.

I took nexium for at least 7 years. In July 2011 I was doing nothing and my left foot started swelling and hurting,at the same time my right groin area started hurting,I thought I,de been bit by a spider on my foot and I thought I hada pulled groin on the right leg. Went to the Doctor and told him inhada spider bite and a pulled groin. As the pan got worse he xrayed my foot and found a fracture, but whe the pain in my right leg got unbearable,I called and told him my pain eds weren't working, I think I need another test to see what's Igoing on. He sent e to get a MRI. And the pain was so bad to have to get on a table and lay there. I ask the tec,if he could tell anything. He said here is defiantly something going on with your hip. He left the room and came back and ask for my Doctors home phone number. Said I don't have it.He then tol my husband to get me to the nearest ER imminently. When we got there they done more X-rays, I screamed and hollered so loud once again the moved me from a gurney to the x ray table, more pain. I credit hurt so bad. They gave me something for pain whitch did not help and set me home. Then I ad to go to an orthopedic Doctor .he said stay off your feet and it will heal, but if you walk on it you could have to have a omelette hip replacement. Well it didn't,t take long til I decided to go ahead with the surgery before it got any worse. I then fractured my right foot in 2 places and the ankle. For no apparent reason. Then in late November 4 months after my hip surgery, I tripped on a throw rug and fell to knees on carpet .It fractured my left femur (a compound fracture) oh the pain and I felt the bone coming out, it bleed. I was rushed to a local hospital and then took to a bigger town for surgery.the surgeon said that is the kind of break you see in car recks. He said no one would have got that bad a fracture from falling to their knees. My bones had to be really bad and like chalk. Horrible unbearable pain again,I begged the to let me die,it was that bad. Three weeks in physical therapy and home care nurses and out patient physical thery. I had to hire someone to take care of me for 7 months. Later when I heard about nexium and fractures. I stopped taking them. That was probably early in 2012. Then I fractured my left ankle. I broke my big toe. I had a fractured my pelvis and broke my 7 th rib again for no apparent reason. I had I think 9 fractures in all.It was scary I never knew when something else would break. I can't walk like I use to.most of the time I use a rollators. My balance is not good. I, so slow walking. I will ever be the same. Pain all the time, can't stay on my feet very long without paying for it. I,m in a Mass Tort Lawsuites against the makers of nexium AstraZeneca. But no amount of money can bring my health back, or make me walk normal again.I,m not able to do things I use to. I hope no one takes this med. The bennifits don't out weigh the pain and loss of mobility.

I was on Prevacid for over 11 years and I have had major problems with bone loss and muscle pain. I researched and found out PPIs can cause these problems and I printed out the information and took it to my doctor and told him I wanted off. He told me the drug was no problem, so I fired him and found another doctor. It is reprehensible what Big Pharma and some doctors do to u, their patients.

I took Prilosec for several years (since around 1998). Then was switched over to Nexium for a few years. Then over the counter Omeprazole was in the stores without a prescription. The cost of Nexium became unbearable even with insurance to I weaned to the Omeprazole that I have taken over the last 2 years. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis at least 4 years ago. I have not had any broken bones that I know of yet but am worried. Because of my severe stomach problems I don't take anything for the osteoporosis but a calcium/Strontium regimen (Growbone). Would I qualify for anything? Is this case Nexium only or both Nexium and Prilosec? Thank you

I have been on Nexium for years and have not been told of these side effects and take calcium too. I had a broken arm that took 8 months to heal, several fingers that broke, a bone fusion to my foot that had to be repeated twice to my left foot which ended up with 2 plates and seven screws being put in.

I have been taking Nexuim the generic one that's prescribed by the VA Hospital. I had a collar bone that was broken in an accident the collar bone never healed the Doctor was puzzled and ask me If I smoke I told him no. I than asked him does Nexium miss up your bones he said I don't know. My Collar bone will stay unattached which causes back pain I think this medicine caused me not to have proper bone healing. Also most of my teeth have cracks I have 2 which I'm getting implants , the rest they put some crowns
