Depo Provera lawsuit
Four women in Canada have filed a class action lawsuit against Pfizer Canada and Pfizer Inc. seeking relief of general damages for the sum of $500,000,000. The plaintiffs have all been long-term users of Depo-Provera, an injectable method of birth control, and they have all been diagnosed with bone mass density (BMS) problems including fractures, hip and spine problems, osteoporosis and other low bone density ailments, all of which have been attributed to the use of Depo Provera. Depo Provera was introduced to the Canadian market in 1997 after having been rejected by Health Canada several years earlier. Pfizer, the drug manufacturer of Depo Provera, issued a black box warning in the U.S. on November 17th, 2004 and a warning in Canada on June 30, 2005, at the same time continuing to heavily market the drug as safe, stating that it "has been used by millions of women around the world for decades." According to the [FDA], "Women who use Depo Provera 104 may lose significant bone marrow density. Bone loss is greater with increasing duration of use and may not be completely reversible." It goes on to say that "It is unknown if use of depo-subQ provera 104 during adolescence or early adulthood, a critical period of bone accretion, will reduce peak bone mass and increase the risk for osteoporotic fracture in later life." Maybe after a few decades? Although the makers of Depo Provera agree that bone mineral density loss is "an important concern", it argues that the FDA's black box warning puts "politics before science in its handling of reproductive health products and the Bush administration's track record of attacks on family planning cannot help but raise questions about the reasons FDA chose to apply the "black box" warning to [Depo Provera]. Try telling that to countless women who are now suffering from bone density injuries. Kentucky Girl on I started using the depo shot when I was 15 years old because my menstrual cycle was so bad I couldn't move! I started the shot and within a few days I had stopped bleeding. Been on the shot ever since (I am now 31) and wouldn't give up the depo shot for anything, I couldn't survive without it! I was off the shot for a short time, got pregnant and went right back on the shot after I had my daughter, never had a problem with it!

Karen on After reading through all of the above comments, I am so very lucky that I am maybe one of the few that has only has good comments to add - I started taking Depo-Vera when I was about 23, as I was unable to take any form of oral pill as it made me throw up everyday. 10yrs later I was starting to think of a family & discussed this with my doctor. I was advised that because of my long history with the drug, conception may take up to 2 yrs. So when I found myself pregnant by my next cycle I was surprised to say the least.... I do how ever experience irregular periods at times, but for the most part I do not have them at all. After having my 1st child I went off the drug for around 5yrs as I was not sexually active. I have recently gone back on Depo-Vera & still find it the best option for me.

Kendra on I was givin the depo shot when I was 17..after my terminated pregnancy. I had about 3-4 shots.. My health has never been the same since. My initial problems were- spotting regularly, hot flushes, emotional mood swings, weight gain. I stopped taking all birth controle when I was 19.. I'm now 24 I experience thick black hair growth on my lip, neck and chin ( this could be corsed by polysystic overies) I am having an ultra sound tomorrow to find out! My periods are still irregular, loss of libido. Thrush and anxiety. I suggest anyone taking birth controle to rethink what they are doing to there bodies..I'm doing everything I can naturally to nurse my body back to health..take care all and sorry for all your troubles x

Deborah Jones on I only got the depo shot once and it has ruined my life! I ended up in the hospital two weeks after the shot I had extreme blood loss and had to stay in the hospital for three days. My stomach started blowing up like I was pregnant and I had constant abdominal pain I was bed ridden for 3 months. After several months I found out that I had developed IBS after taking the shot. My type of IBS is really debilitating I am in constant pain and have to take large amounts of pain pills. There is no cure for IBS so I have to live with this the rest of my life I do not recommend the Depo shot it ruined my life

Kathy Gannon on My 21 year old daughter received the Depo shot 10 days ago to treat her continual bleeding that wasn't controlled with birth control pills. It shut off the bleeding but the side effects have been WAY worse than any bleeding! She has headaches and nausea so severe that she's spent much of this past week in the hospital. And she's got anxiety out of this world! I believe this medication is poison and I wanted to warn every woman out there who is considering trying this shot! I'd like to hear from anyone out there just how long the side effects last! AND how we go about filing a complaint!! We're about to go crazy!!!

Nisha Washington on I started using the shot when I was 16 years-old. From the 1st dose I had nonstop bleeding for over 3 months with spotting in between. With the 2nd dose I began having extremely painful and sharp pain in my pelvis and but. Pains were so bad it felt like I was being shocked from the inside. Couldn't move or breathe when they hiT. I told my doctor but he still gave me another dose. After that one I ended up in the ER from the symptoms. I also got severe headaches. When I stopped taking them I didn't have a period for over 3 months or longer. And when I finally did have one it lasted heavily for weeks. I use NUVA RING now and my cycle is back to normal. But I still get the pains and headaches and Im 21 now. So if you're thinking about taking this shot I would advise against it. Seriously!

Helen High on I used the Depo shot for 5 years after my son was born. I have had problems with my teeth breaking apart which never happened before I started taking the shot. It wasn't until my teeth were beyond repair that I received the letter stating that the depo shot was unsafe. I stopped taking the shot immediately after reading the letter. The Health Dept. I went to even discontinued the shot because it was deemed unsafe. Now 7 years after getting off the shot, I will be beginning the long process of having all my teeth removed and replaced by dentures. I am only 31 years old. Nothing I get done to my teeth, fillings or anything, does not help. They just fall out. I DO NOT advise anybody to start taking this shot and have tried to talk my friends that do still take it to get off of it. If I could go back and do it again I would not take it again.
