Four women in Canada have filed a class action lawsuit against Pfizer Canada and Pfizer Inc. seeking relief of general damages for the sum of $500,000,000. The plaintiffs have all been long-term users of Depo-Provera, an injectable method of birth control, and they have all been diagnosed with bone mass density (BMS) problems including fractures, hip and spine problems, osteoporosis and other low bone density ailments, all of which have been attributed to the use of Depo Provera.
Depo Provera was introduced to the Canadian market in 1997 after having been rejected by Health Canada several years earlier. Pfizer, the drug manufacturer of Depo Provera, issued a black box warning in the U.S. on November 17th, 2004 and a warning in Canada on June 30, 2005, at the same time continuing to heavily market the drug as safe, stating that it "has been used by millions of women around the world for decades."
According to the [FDA], "Women who use Depo Provera 104 may lose significant bone marrow density. Bone loss is greater with increasing duration of use and may not be completely reversible." It goes on to say that "It is unknown if use of depo-subQ provera 104 during adolescence or early adulthood, a critical period of bone accretion, will reduce peak bone mass and increase the risk for osteoporotic fracture in later life."
Maybe after a few decades?
Although the makers of Depo Provera agree that bone mineral density loss is "an important concern", it argues that the FDA's black box warning puts "politics before science in its handling of reproductive health products and the Bush administration's track record of attacks on family planning cannot help but raise questions about the reasons FDA chose to apply the "black box" warning to [Depo Provera].
Try telling that to countless women who are now suffering from bone density injuries.

I started taking the Depo shot after I had my daughter in 2000. Soon after I got off of the shot five years later I started having severe stomach cramps and horrible periods I went to the Doctor several times. The doctor decided to do exploratory surgery on me and I had endometriosis (never had any problems before. I went in twice for surgery to scrap the endometriosis to no avail. In November of 2005 had a total hysterectomy at age 25. When the Doctor talked to me after surgery he said that all my female organs had endometriosis all over them I had cysts on my ovaries. So at age 25 I went into menopause! I am still dealing with all the crap that comes with menopause(weight gain, hot flashes, mood swings, no sex drive)! I truly believe that the Depo caused all of this!! I never had any issues before I took the Depo! I was on birth control pill for 4 yrs and when I got off of them I got pregnant within Two months! This was just a a little a bit of what I went through.

I was on the Depo Shot 17 years ago. It was horrible. I gained 40+ lbs. Had horrible mood swings, horrible cramps. Sadly, it's the only thing I can take now without getting my tubes tied. Same thing is happening again, except I'm getting horrible back pains, and cramps are worse with cysts rupturing. I don't advise anyone to take it. As soon as our new insurance kicks in, I'm getting my tubes tied.

depo have destroyed my life I am suffering from all kinds of health problems now

I have been using depo provera off and on (3 or 4 different times) since I was about 18 years old and I am now 33. Each time I have been on it I have had bad nausea, back aches, neck aches, head aches, stiff muscles in my back & neck, lower sharp abdominal pain, really loose stools, upper abdominal pains (near where you would think the gallbladder is), loss of appetite from the nausea, seems like hair loss more hair on the comb after a shower than use to be but the Dr. said that it is cause I have really long hair, I don't notice any bald patches (yet), fatigue. I am currently on Depo Provera and I have had bad lower abdominal pain in my lower right quadrant that ended me up in the hospital ER, they thought it was my appendix and did a cat scan and the cat scan did reveal that my appendix was in the "normal" size range but on the larger end of normal, they kept me in the hospital over night for observation and sent me home the next day. I have since still had lower abdominal stabbing pains that come and go and upper abdominal discomfort as well and I have been running a temp anywhere from 98.6 (normal but that is before I get up out of bed) up to 100.3 during the day. My dr's have done another cat scan and said that everything has come back normal, they have done blood work and all tests have come back normal, I have had stool samples tested and all come back normal, I am scheduled to see the colon Dr. to have him evaluate me to see if he can determine anything but I have been down that road before the last time I was on Depo and had these symptoms as well and they didn't find anything on a colonoscopy the last two times they have done anything other than they say I have irritable bowel syndrome and acid reflux. None of my pains have ever been explained and the Dr.'s that I go to when I have asked them if it could be the Depo have all said that "no, it couldn't be the depo". The time before this time that I was on depo and had the upper abdominal discomfort the Dr.'s thought maybe it could be my gallbladder, they sent me to the Dr. to have a pipida scan and everything came back normal on that so my gallbladder was fine. Every time I have stopped using the Depo the symptoms I have been having have either gone away or have diminished a whole lot to where I don't feel as bad as I do now all the time. I have never been checked for any bone loss or osteoporosis but I have had two teeth that broke on the softest things when I ate and had to have them pulled, now I have one tooth that has a crack in it that I have to get crowned. I don't know if that could be the cause of Depo or not. I have had cat scans done, ultrasounds, pipida scans, colonocopy's, EGD's, to try and explain the symptoms that I am having. None of the symptoms according to the Dr's are linked to my use of Depo Provera. I should have never listened to the Dr.'s telling me that now that I am older my body has changed and I probably wont have those problems again. Well 3rd time is the final for me! I am never going to take another shot as long as I live! I just hope that once the Depo is out of my system all my pains and nausea go away. Please if you are thinking about taking Depo Provera DON'T! You will spend more money on chasing pains that the Dr's think are linked to something gone on inside of you and not to the Depo! Dr's wont tell you it is a prescription causing this cause they probably get kickbacks from the pharmaceutical companies so they don't want to loose that money!

I started using the depo shot when I was 15 years old because my menstrual cycle was so bad I couldn't move! I started the shot and within a few days I had stopped bleeding. Been on the shot ever since (I am now 31) and wouldn't give up the depo shot for anything, I couldn't survive without it! I was off the shot for a short time, got pregnant and went right back on the shot after I had my daughter, never had a problem with it!

I want to know if there is any way to get part of the settlement that was done a few years ago. I finally got my diagnosis from a doctor. I was on the depo shot for 6 years and I stoped taking it in 2007. I can not get an attorny to help me even though I was just recently diagnosed with the side effects. I can not afford to fix all of the side effects I am suffering from and they effect my everyday life. I need help can some one tell me if there is any way to sue now or be able to join the class action suit against them in 2008????

After reading through all of the above comments, I am so very lucky that I am maybe one of the few that has only has good comments to add - I started taking Depo-Vera when I was about 23, as I was unable to take any form of oral pill as it made me throw up everyday. 10yrs later I was starting to think of a family & discussed this with my doctor. I was advised that because of my long history with the drug, conception may take up to 2 yrs. So when I found myself pregnant by my next cycle I was surprised to say the least.... I do how ever experience irregular periods at times, but for the most part I do not have them at all. After having my 1st child I went off the drug for around 5yrs as I was not sexually active. I have recently gone back on Depo-Vera & still find it the best option for me.

I was givin the depo shot when I was 17..after my terminated pregnancy. I had about 3-4 shots.. My health has never been the same since. My initial problems were- spotting regularly, hot flushes, emotional mood swings, weight gain. I stopped taking all birth controle when I was 19.. I'm now 24 I experience thick black hair growth on my lip, neck and chin ( this could be corsed by polysystic overies) I am having an ultra sound tomorrow to find out! My periods are still irregular, loss of libido. Thrush and anxiety. I suggest anyone taking birth controle to rethink what they are doing to there bodies..I'm doing everything I can naturally to nurse my body back to health..take care all and sorry for all your troubles x

I only got the depo shot once and it has ruined my life! I ended up in the hospital two weeks after the shot I had extreme blood loss and had to stay in the hospital for three days. My stomach started blowing up like I was pregnant and I had constant abdominal pain I was bed ridden for 3 months. After several months I found out that I had developed IBS after taking the shot. My type of IBS is really debilitating I am in constant pain and have to take large amounts of pain pills. There is no cure for IBS so I have to live with this the rest of my life I do not recommend the Depo shot it ruined my life

My 21 year old daughter received the Depo shot 10 days ago to treat her continual bleeding that wasn't controlled with birth control pills. It shut off the bleeding but the side effects have been WAY worse than any bleeding! She has headaches and nausea so severe that she's spent much of this past week in the hospital. And she's got anxiety out of this world! I believe this medication is poison and I wanted to warn every woman out there who is considering trying this shot! I'd like to hear from anyone out there just how long the side effects last! AND how we go about filing a complaint!! We're about to go crazy!!!

I started using the shot when I was 16 years-old. From the 1st dose I had nonstop bleeding for over 3 months with spotting in between. With the 2nd dose I began having extremely painful and sharp pain in my pelvis and but. Pains were so bad it felt like I was being shocked from the inside. Couldn't move or breathe when they hiT. I told my doctor but he still gave me another dose. After that one I ended up in the ER from the symptoms. I also got severe headaches. When I stopped taking them I didn't have a period for over 3 months or longer. And when I finally did have one it lasted heavily for weeks. I use NUVA RING now and my cycle is back to normal. But I still get the pains and headaches and Im 21 now. So if you're thinking about taking this shot I would advise against it. Seriously!

I used the Depo shot for 5 years after my son was born. I have had problems with my teeth breaking apart which never happened before I started taking the shot. It wasn't until my teeth were beyond repair that I received the letter stating that the depo shot was unsafe. I stopped taking the shot immediately after reading the letter. The Health Dept. I went to even discontinued the shot because it was deemed unsafe. Now 7 years after getting off the shot, I will be beginning the long process of having all my teeth removed and replaced by dentures. I am only 31 years old. Nothing I get done to my teeth, fillings or anything, does not help. They just fall out. I DO NOT advise anybody to start taking this shot and have tried to talk my friends that do still take it to get off of it. If I could go back and do it again I would not take it again.
