DirecTV: Consumers Angry About Cancellation Fees
Seattle, WA: Cell phone customers are not the only ones complaining that they are being charged too much for cancellation fees: customers of DirecTV are also upset that they are being unfairly charged for terminating their service. Much like the cell phone companies, DirecTV is apparently using changes to customer contracts as a reason to extend those contracts, often without customer knowledge or authorization. Now, some customers are investigating a lawsuit against DirecTV, alleging they were improperly charged cancellation fees. READER COMMENTS

jay bailey on I want to cancel my service after 2 months with direct tv, because they lied to me, to get me as a customer. The service is terrible and the dvr is complicated and im very unsatisfied with it. I was informed I would be charged $440 for early cancelation. Is there any way I can break contract without the charge?

erik on This is an interesting, deserved decision. The problem now lies in the hands of state governments which will receive this money through their "fraud funds" to be then-disbursed to customers based on their complaint. I [work for a competitor]and have been watching this for a while. It has also been said that DirecTV will be raising rates on their customers an average of $2-3 per month to compensate the loss. Unfortunate for the DirecTV customers. What should also be included here is that DirecTV recently received an "F" from the BBB due to many factors including number of customer complaints.
