"The toll our nation's prescription drug abuse epidemic has taken in communities nationwide is devastating," said Gil Kerlikowske, White House director of national drug control policy. "We share a responsibility to protect our communities from the damage done by prescription drug abuse."
The administration's effort, which is termed "Epidemic: Responding to America's Prescription Drug Abuse Crisis," mainly looks to tackle opioid painkiller abuse. These painkillers, which are reportedly the strongest on the market, include Vicodin and Darvon, the news source said.
According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, Darvon has been associated with a number of side effects including dizziness, vomiting, stomach pain, mood changes and headaches.
