Jury Rules Against Women in Actos Bladder Cancer Trial

. By
Las Vegas, NVA jury has ruled against the plaintiffs in an Actos product liability case brought by two women from Southern Nevada. Actos, a controversial diabetes medication made by Tokyo-based Takeda Pharmaceuticals, has been linked to bladder cancer.

Plaintiffs Delores Cipriano and Bertha Triana, both diabetic, sued Takeda alleging the medication gave them bladder cancer and that the company did not warn users of the drugs' dangers. Both women claimed they were prescribed the drug by their doctors to help them control their blood sugar. Both women developed bladder cancer. The women were seeking a multi-billion dollar verdict, the largest in Nevada history, according to KLAS News Las Vegas.

Actos is one of the most popular diabetes drugs in the world. Recently, however, studies have shown that Actos use is linked to serious side effects, particularly bladder cancer. These studies show that the longer one takes Actos, the greater the risk of developing bladder cancer. As a result of this mounting scientific evidence, the FDA has issued warnings regarding Actos and bladder cancer. In France, the French Agency for Safety of Health Products recalled Actos from the market on June 9, 2011. Regulators in Germany recommended that physicians not prescribe it.
