Two New Studies Debunk Accutane IBD Link, but Questions Remain

. By Email to a friendEmail
Honolulu, HI: Two new studies have challenged the previously established link between Accutane acne medication and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). While Accutane, manufactured by Roche, was pulled from the US market last year, isotretinoin is still available in generic form. Accutane is still available in Canada.

Two New Studies Debunk Accutane IBD Link, but Questions Remain"There has been a lot of concern about this," said Dr. Sheila Fallon Friedlander at the annual Hawaii Dermatology Seminar sponsored by Skin Disease Education Foundation, in comments published on 5/1/10 in Internal Medicine News. "You can't say anything with certainty in life, but at least thus far the data we have are very reassuring that there is no association."

A seven-country systematic data search led by gastroenterologists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found "no clear relationship" between the use of isotretinoin and IBD. An earlier retrospective, nested-case study by investigators at the University of Manitoba utilized the comprehensive provincial IBD database to demonstrate that patients with IBD were no more likely than matched controls to have used isotretinoin prior to diagnosis of IBD.

"Our data suggest that isotretinoin is not likely to cause chronic IBD," the study authors concluded.

Dr. J. Mark Jackson of the University of Louisville, Kentucky, a longtime prescriber of isotretinoin for severe acne cases, told Internal Medicine News that "we now have some very good data reviews showing that IBD is not overrepresented in patients who use isotretinoin. When this issue comes up [in prescribing], we need to make people aware that this rumor has not been validated."

Dr. Seth D. Crocket of the University of North Carolina, who works in gastroenterology and hepatoplogy at the campus, co-authored the American investigation. "Our study was a critical appraisal of the literature and an assessment of causality," he indicated in an interview. "Basically we found that the only published evidence is case reports, which generally is considered poor evidence to establish causality. The best evidence is from epidemiologic studies such as the University of Manitoba study.

"It's important to recognize that the absence of published evidence does not mean the absence of an association; it just means that there's insufficient evidence in the scientific literature thus far to support a causal connection between isotretinoin and IBD."

That hasn't deterred juries from finding in favor of plaintiffs who allege that Accutane caused or triggered their IBD. Dr. Friedlander, a dermatologist and clinical professor of pediatrics and medicine at the University of California in San Diego, referred to the situation as one of conflicting data. "But a bottom line of interest to all of us is that a New Jersey jury has awarded $12.9 million to patients who have taken isotretinoin and developed IBD."

Dr. Jackson of the University of Louisville characterized the Manitoba study as "a really well-done study coming at a critical time," conducted by physicians who deal with IBD and therefore have no stake in protecting a drug that could cause it.

It should be noted that Dr. Jackson disclosed that he has received support from Roche Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer or Accutane, according to disclosures cited in the Internal Medicine News article. Dr. Friedlander is also identified as a longtime prescriber of isotretinoin for severe acne.

While both studies suggested that isotretinoin was not likely to cause IBD, "there may be anecdotes of isotretinoin causing acute colitis," Dr. Friedlander said.

Hi all

Above all do not want to scare or anything like that, but this is my story, and perhaps others will serve to decide whether or not to take the medicine.

My name is David I have 28 years, I'm from Madrid, and I also was taking Dercutane (Isotretinoin) for almost 9 months, a total of 10gram take that for my weight, 65Kilos is the maximum recommended dose can be given.

I had a mild nodular acne that is I got a few pimples but internal and took too long to leave, so the dermatologist decided to give me these miracle pills.

During the treatment, I had the typical side effects, like all people who take it, nothing alarming. But now, after almost a year after completing the treatment when I am suffering more: I have permament dry eyes, back and joint pains continued, headaches, generalized dryness throughout the body, nose bleeds, constipation, anxiety produced through all this trouble sleeping ..

My quality of life has been reduced by 70%, since I can not do almost anything he did before, I can not even bend over without pain in my back and knees.

My life has become a specialist come and go, orthopedic surgeons, ophthalmologists, rheumatologists, neurologists ... and none of them give me solution to my problems.

I created a website so that all who pass or have passed through what I promote it and to know what they can do this drug, which not even the laboratories that produce exactly know the mechanism of action is a poison, and certainly, at least I do, I devote my time and desire to spread my message.

This is the website I created: (In Spanish)

If you took accutane you sold your soul to the devil. You volunteered to undergo chemical warfare without ever setting foot on the battlefield.
Another article trying to debunk the link between IBD and accutane fails to provide any contrary evidence.

This retarded article is was paid for by Hoffman La Roche. The doctor mentioned is only trying to prove otherwise because he is scared to lose his credentials. Criminal drug companies and doctors being slapped with lawsuits, here is a message: Trying to dodge thousands of lawsuits by distorting the truth only makes you more guilty of poisoning people without telling them the real risks of this awful drug.

The truth has been exposed, tried, heard, and yes-the jury decided already that this in fact a dangerous drug and forever banned in medicine.
Yes, it most certainly does cause severe ulcerative colitis. It eats away at the protective lining (mucous) in your intestines leaving you to cry in pain while bleeding out your anus. They know accutane is very toxic and the biggest pharm scandal of the centrury and people end up with destroyed lives from it.
