Accutane Side Effects Could Worsen Celiac Disease

. By Email to a friendEmail
Chicago, IL: A recent study indicates that Accutane side effects caused by an acid found in the acne treatment may worsen a person's celiac disease, which prevents sufferers from being able to consume foods such as cereal and pasta, Reuters reports.

Accutane Side Effects Could Worsen Celiac DiseaseWhile Accutane side effects such as inflammatory bowel disease are relatively well-known, the new study shows that retinoic acid, which is used in the acne drug, could worsen the symptoms of celiac disease and potentially cause tissue damage.

According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, celiac disease is "a condition that damages the lining of the small intestine and prevents it from absorbing parts of food that are important for staying healthy." In turn, celiac disease can lead to serious health issues such as anemia, weight loss and poor bone health, according to the news source.

The most recent findings linking Accutane to the worsening of the condition were published in the journal Nature. To study the condition, which affects approximately one percent of the population, the researchers needed to recreate it in mice, the news source said.
