Potter County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Roger Short told AP, "My home is about 20 miles something away and I could see the flames from my home. You could hear the roar of the flames 20 miles away."

Residents in the nearby area were evacuated to a local school, and firefighters managed to get the blaze under control by about 5:30 am.

Investigators are on the scene to examine the pipeline, which is operated by El Paso Natural Gas, a subsidiary of Houston-based El Paso Corp.
