Avandia caused more Harm than Good News

Akron, OH: Tim Villar, age 38, was prescribed the diabetes drug Avandia to control diabetes 2. It helped lower his blood sugar count but Villar's doctor said it wasn't low enough. Worse, he was born with mitral valve prolapse (MVP) but it never bothered him until his second year on Avandia. Now Villar is worried that he might suffer a heart attack due to this drug.

"I think Avandia has damaged my valves because the entire time I was on this medication—at least 4 or 5 years—my mitral valve has caused flip-flopping of my heart—in other words, palpitations and angina pains," says Villar.

"I told my doctor that the palpitations were getting worse during the time I was taking Avandia," he adds. " My heart was tested two years ago and they didn't see any blockage, but I am still concerned. I qualified to get social security disability due to these side effects. To tell you the truth, I am not certain that my problems are due to Avandia but it seems too coincidental...

Chest X-Ray"My doctor took me off Avandia last fall and a lot of the side effects Avandia apparently causes have vanished. I was suffering from edema, fluid retention and the palpitations were getting worse. Plus fatigue. Since I stopped taking Avandia, these problems have subsided—I still retain some fluid and a little edema but I don't have any more heart pains.

My heart pains stopped almost immediately after I stopped taking Avandia. My doctor mentioned the negative side of Avandia and how it can be causing more harm than good. He put me on insulin shots instead because he wanted to get my blood sugar count under control. And it is working. And I am also losing weight—that's a definite bonus! I have lost about 25 pounds since last September without any extra exercise or dieting.

The minute Avandia hit the news I started researching. It could cause fatigue, heart attacks, strokes, heart palpitations, angina pains and more. That's when I got worried. And this medication was tearing up my digestion system. I was nauseous and had diarrhea all the time—that was the main reason why I had to go on disability--seemed like I spent most of my time in the bathroom.

Since I have been off Avandia, I just have a bit of nausea but don't spend much time in the bathroom anymore. When I get my blood sugar count down a bit more I am hopeful that I will be able to go back to work. In the meantime, I am interested in getting involved in a lawsuit against Avandia because it is quite possible that I wouldn't be disabled today if it hadn't been for this drug—I was working full time when I started taking Avandia and my health went downhill within a few years.

Two years ago I had to go to ER because I thought I was having a heart attack—I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't a direct result of Avandia. They said it was probably an anxiety attack; I have never had an anxiety attack in my life and never had one since. But it sure felt like a heart attack.

I would like to know if Avandia has caused damage to my valve: a cardiologist told me that I have two choices: either put up with the pain or have heart valve surgery. Since I quit Avandia, I don't have to make that choice, at least regarding the pain."
