Little Rock, AR: More and more lawsuits are being filed against GlaxoSmithKline, alleging the company hid the risks associated with its diabetes drug, Avandia, from the public. As more information is released about the increased risk of heart attack and heart failure in patients taking Avandia, more lawsuits will likely be filed.

The most recent lawsuit was filed in federal court in the Western District of Arkansas and alleges that Avandia caused the heart problems experienced by a diabetes patient. The plaintiff seeks compensatory and punitive damages, attorney fees and court costs. The lawsuit alleges that GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) did not properly warn consumers about the increased risk of cardiac problems associated with Avandia.

Avandia diabetes syringesA Texas widow filed a wrongful death lawsuit against GSK, alleging Avandia caused her husband's death. The plaintiff claims that GSK failed to warn consumers about the life threatening risks of Avandia and negligently marketed the drug. She further claims that in 2005, GSK hid evidence about the risks of Avandia to protect its profits and only warned the FDA about potential complications a year after the company knew of them.

The lawsuit seeks attorney's fees, compensatory, punitive and exemplary damages, pain and suffering reimbursement, mental anguish, loss of companionship, funeral expenses and pre- and post-judgment interest.

A lawsuit was also filed in federal court in New York, seeking over $100 million in damages. The plaintiff alleges that GSK hid the risks of Avandia from the public. According to the lawsuit, the patient began taking Avandia in September 1999 and suffered a heart attack in February 2004.

Many people have written in to [LawyersandSettlements] about their problems with Avandia. Some of these problems are severe, with one man saying he required five bypasses and suffered a heart attack after taking Avandia for two years. Another Avandia patient reports that he required heart stents after taking the drug for seven years. Still another Avandia patient reported suffering severe chest pain a year after he began his Avandia medication.

The FDA recently announced that Avandia would come with a black box warning, alerting patients and medical professionals about the risks associated with the drug. Unfortunately, this warning comes too late for some patients who have already suffered serious consequences after taking Avandia. [Neil Pender's] father passed away after taking Avandia. He had only taken the drug for five months before he was taken off it because of fatigue and swollen feet. [Catherine Taylor's] husband died three months after his Avandia dosage was doubled.

Patients taking Avandia have reported that some of their serious side effects occurred shortly after they began taking the drug. In some cases, side effects were noticed within the first two months of taking Avandia. Patients taking Avandia could have as much as a 43% increased risk of heart attack and also have an increased risk of heart failure.

Recently, results from a meta-analysis published by The Cochrane Library showed that Avandia does not positively influence the quality or length of diabetes patients' lives. Furthermore, the analysis showed that Avandia may worsen complications arising from type 2 diabetes, which Avandia is intended to treat. The analysis also linked Avandia to edema, weight gain, heart failure and bone fractures. Finally, the analysis found that Avandia did not reduce the rate of death in diabetes patients and did not lower blood sugar better than other diabetes pills.
