Ottawa, ON: Avandia Canada patients have been warned to speak with their doctors after a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found a link between the risk of heart-related problems and Avandia.
The study, published last month, combined the results of 42 clinical trials and found that Avandia increased the risk of heart attack by 43 percent and the risk of heart-related death by 64 percent. Since the release of the study many patients in Canada have become concerned about using Avandia and they are being advised to contact their doctors to discuss any concerns.
Following the release of the study, Health Canada said it would analyze the study's results in an assessment of the benefits and risks of Avandia. Health Canada has no immediate plans to change the labeling for Avandia, although that may change now that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has changed the labeling in the United States. Recently, the FDA requested that GlaxoSmithKline add a black box warning, the most severe warning available to Avandia, alerting consumers about the risk of heart-related problems.
Meanwhile in the United States a Texas family has filed a lawsuit against GlaxoSmithKline, alleging that Avandia played a part in the death of a 60-year-old man who died the same day that the study was published. The victim, Larry Alan Stanford, died of a heart attack after taking Avandament, a form of Avandia combined with another diabetes drug, for over two years. The lawsuit claims that GlaxoSmithKline failed to adequately warn users about the risks associated with using Avandia.
Another lawsuit has also been filed, this one on behalf of shareholders who purchased securities between October 27, 2005 and May 21, 2007. The lawsuit alleges that GlaxoSmithKline made false and misleading statements about Avandia and failed to disclose the results of Avandia trials with investors and potential investors.
Avandia has been available for use in Canada for seven years. IMS Health Canada estimates that in 2006, Canadian pharmacies dispensed over 14,000,000 prescriptions for Avandia.
Patients who are currently taking Avandia should not discontinue its use without speaking with their doctor. However, those who have a history of heart problems or liver disorders are advised to contact their doctor to determine if another drug might be more appropriate.
