Another ReNu Lens Solution Product Recalled

. By
Chicago, ILFollowing the recall of ReNu with MoistureLoc, Bausch & Lomb has announced it is recalling certain lots of ReNu MultiPlus contact lens solution. The company decided to recall the product after receiving reports of discolored lens solution.

The ReNu MultiPlus lots are being recalled because they contained a high level of trace iron that could discolor the solution and shorten the product's shelf life. Company representatives believe that most of the recalled products have already been used up by consumers. They also said that they have not received any reports of serious injuries. However, when Health Canada announced the recall in Canada it warned that use of the defective solution could make the user susceptible to eye infections.

Symptoms of eye infection include redness, swelling, discharge, pain, itchiness, and sensitivity to light. If you have used ReNu MultiPlus and experience those symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

The recall involved 12 lots of ReNu MultiPlus. Approximately one million bottles were distributed in the United States; however the affected product was also sold in Canada, Latin America, and Asia.

If you have any ReNu MultiPlus solution that is discolored or that has the expiration date "2008 - 03" stop using it immediately.

Bausch & Lomb, makers of ReNu products, is still recovering after a recall involving ReNu with MoistureLoc. The lens solution was permanently withdrawn from the market after an investigation revealed that ReNu with MoistureLoc was the potential root cause of a Fusarium keratitis infection outbreak. Although an outbreak appeared in Asia in the fall of 2005, ReNu with MoistureLoc was not recalled in the United States until 2006. Many people required corneal transplants to restore their vision after being exposed to Fusarium keratitis and a few claim that they lost an eye from the infection.

Both ReNu with MoistureLoc and ReNu MultiPlus were made at the Greenville, South Carolina plant. The plant was investigated by field officers of the Food and Drug administration and the Center for Disease Control & Prevention and was found to have numerous violations.

Lawsuits against Bausch & Lomb in the wake of the ReNu with MoistureLoc recall are now being filed. One lawsuit was filed on behalf of a professional racecar driver who claims use of the lens solution caused serious and permanent injury to his eyes, requiring corneal replacement surgery.

A researcher at the University of Iowa has been subpoenaed to hand findings of her own investigation into ReNu with MoistureLoc to the court. According to an article in the Daily Iowan, the researcher noticed, shortly after ReNu with MoistureLoc went on the market, that volunteers from her office who used the solution had an unusual number of dead cells in their eyes. She concluded that the new preservative in the solution was getting trapped in the lenses causing the eye damage. The researcher's documents will be used in a lawsuit against a number of plaintiffs including Bausch & Lomb.
