Class action suit filed against Johnson & Johnson's Panacryl Sutures News

March 2, 2007. By Jane Mundy
A class action case has been filed against Johnson & Johnson alleging their Panacryl Sutures caused infection and repeat surgeries.

On January 22, 2002, plaintiff Perlene Herring was admitted into hospital for an exploratory laparotomy, a total abdominal hysterectomy and a bilateral salpingo-cophorectomy.

Dr. Powell performed the surgery using Panacryl sutures, and the plaintiff, almost immediately afterwards, began experiencing problems, including low grade fever and purulent drainage.

The patient also developed a chronic draining sinus tract from her abdominal incision.

Plaintiff had to undergo multiple procedures and finally, in December 2003, had a final surgery to remove the Panacryl sutures. The patient was left disabled.
